Induction Motor Drive

1. A 440V, 3-phase, 50Hz, 6-pole, 945 rpm, delta connected squirrel-cage induction motor
has following parameters referred to the stator: Rs = 2 Ω, R'r = 2 Ω, Xs = 3 Ω, X'r = 4 Ω
When driving a fan load it runs at rated speed. The Motor speed is controlled by
stator voltage control. Determine
a. Motor terminal voltage, current and torque at 800 rpm.
b. motor speed, current and torque for the terminal voltage of 280V.

2. A 440 V, 50 Hz, 6 poles, Y connected squirrel cage induction motor has the following
parameters: Rs = 0.6 Ω, R'r = 0.3 Ω, Xs = X’r = 1 Ω. The normal full load slip is 0.05
The motor is fed from a voltage source inverter, which maintain a constant V/f ratio. for
an operating frequency of 10 Hz, calculate the breakdown torque as a ratio of its value at
the rated frequency. What should be V/f ratio at 10 Hz so that the breakdown torque at this
frequency remains the same as rated frequency.

3. A 4-pole,3-phase induction motor has the following parameters in ohms per phase
referred to the stator: Rs = R'r = 0.034 Ω and Xs = X'r = 0.18 Ω at 50Hz.The motor is
controlled by the variable frequency control with a constant (V /f ). Determine the
following for an operating frequency of 15 Hz:
a. The breakdown torque as a ratio of its value at the rated frequency for motoring and
braking.
b. The starting torque and rotor current in terms of their values at the rated frequency.
c. rated slip is 4% then determine the motor speed for rated torque and f = 25 Hz.

4. A 460V, 3-phase, 4-pole, 1420 rpm, 50 Hz star-connected induction motor has the
following parameters per phase referred to the stator: Rs = 0.66 Ω, R'r = 0.38 Ω, Xs = X'r
= 1.14 Ω, X m = 32 Ω. The motor is fed by a variable frequency current source. The motor
is made to operate at the rated flux at all operating points. Determine the following:
a. Slip speed for I1 80 A
b. The frequency and stator current for operation at 750 rpm for the following torque
values:
i. 520 N-m
ii. – 566.81 N-m.
The motor is controlled by a variable frequency control at a constant flux of rated value.
Determine the following:
a. The motor speed and the stator current at half the rated torque and 25 Hz.
b. By assuming the speed–torque curves to be straight lines, solve for part (a), for S <
Sm.
c. The frequency, the stator current, and voltage at a rated braking torque and 1200 rpm.

5. A 3-phase, 400V, 50Hz, 6 poles, 960 rpm, Y-connected wound rotor induction motor has
the following constants referred to the stator.: Rs = 0.5 Ω, R'r = 0.7 Ω, Xs = 1.5 Ω, X'r = 1.6
Ω.
a. The speed of the motor is reduced to 800 rpm at half full load toque by injecting a
voltage in phase with source voltage into the rotor, calculate the magnitude and the
frequency of the injected voltage. Stator to rotor turns ratio is 2.2.
b. The braking torque for a speed of 1040 rpm when the injected voltage has z zero
magnitude.
c. Calculate the magnitude and the frequency of the injected voltage for speed 600 rpm,
and the braking torque equal to that calculated in (b). Assume the injected voltage to in
be phase with the source voltage.

6. A 3 phase 400V 50 Hz 4 pole 1400 rpm Y-connected wound rotor induction motor has the
following constants referred to the stator.: Rs = 2 Ω, R'r = 3 Ω, Xs = X'r = 3.5 Ω. The stator
to rotor turn ratio is 2. The motor speed is controlled by Static Scherbius Drive. The inverter
is directly connected to the source. Determine
a. the speed range of the drive when αmax =165o
b. The firing angle for 0.4 times the rated motor torque and a speed of 1200 rpm.
c. Torque for a speed of 1050 rpm and firing angle of 95o.

7. A 3-phase, 400V, 50Hz, 4 poles, 1450 rpm star-connected squirrel cage induction motor
has the following per phase referred to the stator.: Rs = 0.11Ω, R'r = 0.09 Ω, Xs = 0.4 X'r
= 0.6 Ω, Xm=12 Ω. The motor is controlled by a six-step inverter. The d.c. input to the
inverter is provided by a six-pulse, fully-controlled rectifier.
a. What should be the rectifier firing angle for getting the rated fundamental voltage
across the motor if the rectifier is fed by an a.c. source of 400 V, 50 Hz.
b. If the machine is operated at a constant flux then determine–
i. the inverter frequency at 560 rpm. and rated torque
ii. the inverter frequency at 460 rpm and half the rated torque. Also determine
the motor current

8. A 3-phase, 400V, 50Hz, 6 poles, 980 rpm, star-connected, squirrel-cage induction motor
has the following parameters per phase referred to the stator: Rs = 0.2Ω, R'r = 0.12 Ω, Xs
= 0.18 X'r = 0.4Ω, Xm=10.3 Ω. The current source inverter controls the motor. At the
rated value, flux is maintained constant. Compute the following:
a. The stator current and d.c. link current, when the machine operates at rated torque
and 50 Hz.
b. The inverter frequency and d.c. link current for a speed of 500 rpm and rated torque.
c. The motor speed, stator current, and d.c. link current for half of the rated torque and
inverter frequency of 25 Hz.

9. A cycloconverter is operating on 415 V, 50 Hz three-phase system and is controlling an


induction motor in the speed range 5 to 20 Hz (non-reversible) using constant V /f
control. Load power factor is 0.8 and the input displacement factor is 0.7. Determine
a. Range of variation of firing angle of cycloconverter
b. Worst value of input power factor
c. Highest value of distortion-factor.
10. A 1 phase 220V 50 Hz 1410 rpm induction motor has the following parameters: : Rs =
2.3Ω, R'r = 3.6 Ω, Xs = X'r = 2.5Ω, Xm=60 Ω. The motor drives a fan load at the rated
speed when rated voltage is applied
a. What resistance should be connected in series with the motor to reduce its speed to
1190rpm?
b. What voltage should be applied t the motor to reduce its speed to 1190 rpm
