Adopt A Student Lesson Plan

Objectives

• The student will demonstrate correct playing posture.

• The student will demonstrate correct assembly of the flute.

• The student will demonstrate a G major scale.

• The student will demonstrate Hot Cross Buns.

Procedures

• Assemble the flute

• Open the case and name the three parts (head joint and lip plate, body, foot joint)

• Pick up the head joint and the body

• Without grabbing the lip plate or any keys, gently push and twist parts together

• Align the main keys with the center of the embouchure hole

• Pick up the foot joint and (without grabbing the keys) gently push and twist into the body

so that the key rod is centered to the last body key

• Posture

• Sit up straight in the chair, feet on the floor, shoulders relaxed

• Left hand: thumb on key, index on second key, middle on fourth key, ring on fifth key,

pinky above pinky key

• Right hand: index on eighth key, middle on ninth key, ring on tenth key, pinky on pinky

key

• Lip plate should be parallel to the embouchure, not necessarily parallel to the floor

• Embouchure

• Form the embouchure by saying the word “poo”

• Center the hole of the lip plate on the center of the embouchure

• The bottom of the hole should be just touching the fleshy part of the bottom lip

• First sounds

• Say “poo” and then blow air through the embouchure without the flute first

• Then add the flute, no fingerings

• The air should go over the embouchure hole and slightly downwards (like blowing a

bottle), not blown directly down into it

• If the student has trouble, try only on head joint

• Put head joint back on flute, make sound

• Add fingerings for a G

• Practice playing G

• Add fingering for A, practice A

• Add fingering for B, practice B

• Practice switching from G up to A and B, and then back down

• Practice tonguing each note

• Tongue should articulate each note by hitting the roof of the mouth right behind the front

teeth
• Sing “Hot Cross Buns” on the syllable “tu”

• Starting on B, play “Hot Cross Buns”

• Practice “Hot Cross Buns” and address any issues

• Starting from G, move up the scale note by note to learn whole scale

• Learn one new note, then start from the bottom and move up to that note (adds one new

note each time)

• Practice slurring through whole scale

• Practice tonguing whole scale

Assessment

• Teacher will assess the student’s ability to assemble the flute by having the student do it herself

and checking for errors

• Teacher will assess the student’s ability to maintain correct posture by observing the student’s

posture throughout the lesson

• Teacher will assess the student’s ability to play “Hot Cross Buns” by listening to the student

play by herself

• Teacher will assess the student’s ability to play a G major scale by listening to the student play

by herself with special attention to fingerings
