MCT/MST Lesson Observation

Feedback to student teacher

Student teacher’s name: Bahja Hadi Grade Level: Grade 5

Unit/Lesson: Math-Volume Date: March 5, 2018

Competency Area E G S M US
Professionalism and Understanding X
Professional growth
Planning for learning X
Planning activities and lesson aims
Implementing and Managing Learning X
Language and delivery
Classroom management X
Communication skills X
Monitoring and Assessment X
Critical Reflection X
Strengths of the lesson:
1. Bahja was able to carry on with her lesson and be creative even though there
was a malfunction with the computer
2. Bahja has a variety of activities for students to complete that allow for a final
product to be produced
3. Bahja sits with a low group and models how to calculate volume
4. Bahja encourages the use of alternative methods to determining volume

Areas for development:

1. The primary language of use should be English as noted in your previous observation
feedback
2. Be sure that you do not give the students too much information in the opening of your
lesson
3. You must arrive on time daily, but especially on the day of your observation
4. Be sure that you clearly communicate instructions to students
5. Check for understanding while sharing a video with students

E = Excellent, G = Good, S = Satisfactory, M = Marginal and US = Unsatisfactory

Student-Teacher: bahja hadi
Date: 5-2-2017
Course: math

Grade Level: Grade 5

Subject: math
Strand:
Learning Outcome: Understand the volume formula and how to solve it.

Opening (warmer activity + teacher introduction/demonstration of small group activities)

Time: 15 min

For the opining/warm up the teacher will show for the students a video called (Volume Song For Kids ★
Whole

Measuring Video by NUMBEROCK) after the video is finished the teacher will ask the students what they
understand or what they can get from this video.

Guided and Independent Experience (group working with the teacher)

The teacher will explain the formula of the volume which “length x breadth x height is” by solving a problem
in the bored and will make sure that the student understands that after they fined the answer they should
write “cm3 “and understand why! The teacher will show a 3d cube and will show how to solve the volume of
this cube. After the teacher is finished explaining the teacher will give the first three groups an activity which
Time: 15 min
Whole

is finding the volume for rectangle prism it is basically an envelope that have inside it many shapes and the
grope need to find the volume together. The other 2 groups will have to make their own rectangular prism
and they will have to roll the dice and label their rectangle prism by the numbers they will get after they
finished labelling their own rectangle they will use the formula that they learn to solve the volume of their
rectangular The final group they will work with the teacher to solve the box that is placed in the table.

Closing
Time: 15 min

The teacher will show three pictures in the bored and then she will choose three girls to come in the bored
Whole

and find the volume of each pictures. After the girls finish the teacher will ask what is the formula that they
use? And why the wrote cm3 beside the answer.

Assessment
As assessment the students will work in their math book (maths around us) page 186, exercises 3 and 4.
11:35 Students enter the classroom and teacher
explains that they are to sit in their color
groups.
The teacher is asked in Arabic for
clarification and teacher responds in Arabic
*Could you have had the colors on the desk
so that students would know where to sit?
11:40 T tells students to put their hands on their
heads and to be quiet.
T greets students and they stand to greet her.
T tells students to put their eyes on the
board.
11:41 T plays a video
*You did not introduce the video or
outcome
*You should stop the video periodically to
ask questions and ensure that students
understand
11:45 T reminds students that they learned volume
and asks them to review as MST fixes the
computer and projector
T asks which type of shape and the
measurements used to find volume.
11:46 T asks who can give the volume formula
(volume=l (length)x w(width) x h(height)
T translates each word into Arabic
T asks which unit to use and states cm, but
requires students to give the exponent
(cube)
T asks why we use cubed and not squared
and explains each of the dimensions to be
measured.
*Projector not working
11:53 T explains that students will have 2 shapes
(draws a cube and a rectangular prism)
T has students to write the name of the
second shape on the board
*Teacher corrects the spelling of prism for
the student.
11:56 T places numbers on the board for a shape
and works with students to solve 9x5x4
A student volunteers to solve but gets the
answer wrong of 162, but teacher does not
correct
12:01 Teacher uses pop cubes to create a cube and
asks the students if they can figure out the
volume without the formula.
*Your outcome requires that students use
the volume formula, so do you really want
students attempting to solve the volume
without the formula?
T works with students to solve for volume
without the formula
12:05 T asks students if they already have the
activity on their table and students say no
T explains the instructions for the activity
for each group
*T tells one group to pay attention and tells
the other group to wait (why can’t the
students start their task?)
T goes to each group
12:08 T states that she is giving everyone 15
minutes to complete the task and starts the
timer
*Just before starting the timer, the teacher
tells students not to start without her and has
not been to each group.
3 groups roll dice to come up with the l, w,
and h of the cube or rectangular prism
drawn.
Another group must discover the volume of
a shape without using the formula.
The final group is with the teacher who is
modeling how to find the l,w,and h of a
cube and rectangular prism.
*Perhaps the teacher needs a whiteboard to
write down findings
*Every student in the group should have the
shapes (could be real world items) and
rulers to work alongside you
12:20 Students have a break and begin to leave
