5 MIN - Review the anatomy of the digestive system of the previous lesson
- Introduce the topic of the day’s lesson – “Digestive Disorders”
Lesson Steps (Describe the sequence of the lesson.)
- Explain various disorders of the digestive system – include: the description, causes,
symptoms, and treatment methods of each digestive disorder
55 MIN - Disorders that will be examined – heartburn, peptic ulcers, constipation, irritable
bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis),
hepatitis (A, B, and C), cirrhosis, gallstones, appendicitis, and diabetes
- Review techniques that doctors use to diagnose digestive disorders including,
endoscope, X-Rays, ultrasounds, stool, urine and blood samples, etc.
Conclusion (How will you wrap-up the lesson?)
15 MIN - After the lesson, students will get into groups of 4 for an activity
o Each group will get a chance to review and diagnose the patients described in 3
different case studies
o Using a handout provided as a guide, students must order certain tests from the
lab technician (me) so that they are able to properly diagnose the patient with
the correct digestive disorder
o Tests include – urine, blood and stool samples, X-Ray, endoscopy etc.
- Once all groups have a chance to correctly diagnose each patient, they will be given
homework questions to complete
