Music Concept/Title of Lesson: Music Theory - Triads

Grade Level: 11-12
Date & Time: Monday March 28th 2018
Objectives: Students will be able to identify major and minor triads by using problem solving
techniques provided by teacher.
Students will be able to modify a pre-built triad using their current knowledge of
major and minor keys, and the accidentals that make a key major or minor.
Students will be able to write triads using their knowledge of interval spacing and
key signatures.

Materials:
● SMARTBoard
● SMARTNotebook
● Internet (or wireless hotspot)
● Whiteboard Table in HDHS Music Classroom
● Sharpies and Whiteboard Markers
● Student Chromebooks
● Personal Laptop (for SMARTNotebook)

Procedure:
● Before teaching triads, give quiz on intervals. This should not take the whole class.
● Once quiz is finished, begin teaching triads using visuals on SMARTNotebook.
○ What is a triad?
■ Tri = 3
■ How many notes are in a triad? (3)
■ What are the main intervals in a triad? (Draw a triad on the slide) (3)
○ Identify triads
■ Using slide, have students identify what kind of thirds are in the shown
triads (major and minor.) Identify bottom interval, and then identify top
interval.
○ Triad Table
■ Students will now copy the triad table on the slide on to their space at the
whiteboard table. This will be used as a reference as needed throughout
the unit.
○ Work on own (Top third, bottom third, whole triad.)
■ 10.1 Exercise 1: Complete on own, and then review together. (Student
will have an assigned question on the board that they will fill out, and as a
class we will figure out if the answer is correct or incorrect.)
■ 10.1 Exercise 2: Complete on own, review together.
■ 10.1 Exercise 3: Complete on own, review together.
○ Work together as a class using examples on the board.
■ Triad Building Slide
●Assign students to example. Students complete assigned
examples one by one; peer communication encouraged.
○ "Do You Wanna Build a Triad?"
■ Musictheory.net activity
● Add sharps and flats to make answers correct.
○ SMARTLab Assessment
■ Use Chromebooks to answer
● Classlab.com
○ Announcements
■ Homework 10.2 1, 2, and 3

Assessment:
SMARTLab multiple choice assessment. This allows the students to anonymously answer a
question, and it allows me to see who is understanding the concept and who is not.
