Lesson Plan Template

Subject(s): Plate Tectonics Date: April 10,2017

Teacher: Aja Washington School: CSUDH

1. Objective
Topic: Plate Boundaries
 Students will be familiar with plate tectonics
 Students will learn about plate boundaries.
 Students will know the difference between the different plate
boundaries: convergent, divergent and transform.
 Students will become familiar with seafloor spreading.
 Students will learn about Pangea.

2. Learning Target(s): (What will students know & be able to do as a result of this
lesson?)
 Students will be able to describe plate tectonics.
 Students will be able to identify the different plate boundaries:
convergent, divergent, and transform.
 Students will have an understanding about Pangea and how it was
caused.
 Students will be able to define terms like:
1. Plate Tectonics- plates that make up Earth’s crust.
2. Plate boundaries- at these locations where two plates interact, a
boundary between these plates exist.
3. Divergent- is a boundary when two tectonic plates are moving away
from one another.
4. Convergent- when two plates are getting push against one another,
one is then forced down beneath the other.
5. Transform- where two plates slide against one another in a sideways
motion.
6. Pangea- is the supercontinent that consist of all continents on earth.

3. Relevance/Rationale:
The outcomes of this lesson are important in the real world because it helps
students become more familiar with plate tectonics and the effect it has on
Earth. It will benefit them because they’ll new vocabulary words. They’ll also
have an understanding on what happens when earthquakes and volcanoes
occur.
4. Formative Assessment Criteria for success: (How will you & your students know
if they have successfully met the outcomes? By what criteria will they be
assessed?)
I will assess my students will a true/false test
Examples:
1. Transform boundary is when two plates move away from one another.

Answer: False; Transform boundary is two plates slide against one another
sideways.
2. There are more than three plate boundaries.
Answer: False; There are only three plate boundaries: transform, divergent,
and convergent.
5. Activities/Tasks: (What learning experiences will students engage in?)
-First I will have a discussion with my students by asking them a few questions
like:
Has anyone heard about plate tectonics?
Does anyone know what plate tectonics is?
Has anyone heard about plate boundaries?
What are plate boundaries?
- Next I will show my students a video that will inform them on plate tectonics
and plate boundaries.

- After the video, I will start my activity. This activity I will use a Oreo cookie to
demonstrate the three different plate boundaries.
- First I will pass out a paper towel to every student.
- Next I will pass out one Oreo cookie to each student.
- Then I’ll instruct my students by telling them to twist off the top
part of the cook leaving the other side with the cream and the
bottom half of the cookie.
- After that I’ll ask them to break the top cookie in half.
- Then I’ll instruct them to push the two broken cookie halves on the
cookie with the cream. Then I’ll tell them to slide them apart. This is
representing Divergent Boundary.
- Next I’ll tell them to push one cookie underneath the other one the
cookie with the cream. This is now representing convergent
boundary.
- The last boundary will be transform boundary I will tell them to slide
the broken piece’s side by side.

When the activity is done I’ll ask my students to write a paragraph about the plate
boundaries and what they’ve learned
6. Resources/Materials: (What texts, digital resources, & Materials will be used in
this lesson?)
- Paper
- Pencils
- Paper towels
- Oreos
- Projector
- Laptop
