Analysis of Food Dyes in Beverages

Goal: The goal of this experiment was to find the concentration of FD&C food dye in PowerAde

using a spectrometer and graphical analysis.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the PowerAde was most similar to Solution B. A large error played

into the results because the wrong amount of water was added to the stock solution, diluting

them more. This is why the trend line does not match up with our data.

Application: to find the amount of red dye in a sports drink, you perform the same experiment,

but with a different color of stock solution. You would also need to change the number on the

SPEC 20 to about 490. This will give a more accurate reading than using the number for the blue

dye. In the initial lab, Blue 1 was used and for this lab Red 40 will be used.
