Analyzing

Data and MAD

Notes

Analyzing Data Using Statistical Measures
When we are given data, we can use statistical measures such as
the mean, median, mode, and range to analyze it, and to
compare it to other sets of data

Measures of Center:
Mean: The average of a data set (found by adding up all the
values, and dividing by the number of values)
Median: The middle value of the data set
Mode: The most often data value

Measure of Spread:
Range: The distance between the minimum (smallest number)
and maximum (largest number) in the data set
Example
The data below shows the number of miles run by the students
in a class. Find the mean, median, mode, and range.

12, 1, 6, 10, 1, 2, 3, 10, 3, 8, 3, 9, 8, 6, 8

Mean: 90 ÷ 15 = 6
The mean is 6
Median: 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 6, 6, 8, 8, 8, 9, 10, 10, 12
The median is 6
Mode: There are two modes: 3 and 8
Range: Minimum: 1, Maximum: 12,
The range is 11
Practice
Josie recorded the average monthly temperatures of two cities in
the state where she lives.
City One: 23, 38, 39, 48, 55, 56, 71, 86, 57, 53, 43, 31
City Two: 8, 23, 24, 33, 40, 41, 56, 71, 42, 38, 28, 16

1.  Which city has a higher mean?

City One: 50, City Two: 35

2. Which city has a larger range?

City One: 63, City Two: 63 (Neither)

Mean Absolute Deviation
Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD): the average distance between
each data value and the mean. Used to describe how the data is
spread out.
Calculating the MAD:
1.  Find the mean of the data set
2.  Find each data points’ distance from the mean
3.  Find the average (mean) of those distances

Example: Below are the number of snow days each school in a

district in Mill County had this year. Find the MAD.
6, 8, 3, 2, 6
Example: Below are the number of snow days each school in a district in Mill
County had this year. Find the MAD.
6, 8, 3, 2, 6

1.  Mean: (6 + 8 + 3 + 2 + 6) ÷ 5 = 25 ÷ 5 = 5

2. Distance from 5
6–5=1
8–5=3
5–3=2
5–2=3
6–5=1

3. MAD: (1 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 1) ÷ 5
10 ÷ 5 = 2
The mean absolute deviation (MAD) is 2
On average, the number of snow days a school has is 2 days away from the mean.
Example: Below are the number of snow days each school in a
district in Mill County had this year. Find the MAD.
6, 8, 3, 2, 6
Extra Practice
For the data below, what is the mean absolute deviation? Round decimal
answers to the nearest tenth.
2, 7, 2, 3, 8, 2

1.  Mean: (24) ÷ 6 = 4

2. Distance from 4
2, 3, 2, 1, 4, 2

3. MAD: (14) ÷ 6

The mean absolute deviation (MAD) is 2.3

Practice
Below is data from 5 random students in a 7th grade class
on their average height, in inches. Find the mean and
mean absolute deviation (MAD) for the data.

59, 63, 61, 57, 60

Mean: 60
MAD: (1+3+1+3) ÷ 5 = 1.6

On average, students heights are 1.6 inches away from the

mean height.
