PART 1: GENERAL

1.1 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Read and conform to:

1. The General Conditions of the Contract CCDC 2,


2. Section 00 73 00, Supplementary Conditions CCDC
2,
3. The Sections of Division 1.

2. All work of this Section to conform to the appropriate


requirements of the most recent edition of the Ontario
Building Code.

3. Coordinate work of this Section, and other related


Sections, to ensure satisfactory and expeditious
completion of the Work.

4. Review and update all work schedules with Consultant


on a regular basis.

5. Examine the Work of this, and all related Sections to


confirm the extent, location, quality, and condition
prior to commencing.

6. Discontinue work during severe rain, wind, heat, cold,


or other such inclement weather and monitor time lost
in relation to Environment Canada daily norms. Lost
time will only be considered where actual conditions
exceed norms.

1.2 SUMMARY

1. Furnish all labour, materials, equipment and services


necessary to perform the Work of this Section as
specified.

2. Protect, and repair as necessary, all materials adjacent


to, or affected by this Work.

3. Remove and dispose of existing railing and panel


system, as specified and as indicated.

4. Install new aluminum railing with perforated metal


panels, as specified and as directed.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

1. Submit shop drawings showing design of aluminum


railing system in accordance with Division 1.

Shop drawings shall be sealed by a Professional


Engineer registered in the Province of Ontario.

2. Shop drawings shall show cuts, copes, connections,


holes, fasteners, anchors, types, sizes, spacing of posts,
welds and all relevant dimensions.

3. Upon request, obtain from aluminum railing


manufacturer and submit to Consultant copy of test
data from certified independent testing laboratory
confirming compliance with applicable codes and
standards.

4. Before work commences, verify in writing that


materials submitted and approved are mutually
compatible and are compatible with existing materials.
Support verification with manufacturer(s) data and/or
certification.

5. If a material submitted and approved is not suitable for


verification and/or certification, submit alternate
material for verification and certification for review by
Consultant and approval by Owner.

6. Provide colour samples for review by Consultant and


approval by Owner of materials exposed to view at
completion of the Work.

7. Upon request, submit Material Safety Data Sheets.

7. CAN 3-S157-M & ASTM E935-13e1 “Standard Test


Methods for Performance of Metal Railing Systems for
Buildings”.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

1. All aluminum railings and related components shall be


by the same manufacturer.

2. All aluminum railings and related components shall be


installed by a Contractor approved by the manufacturer.
Provide written evidence of approval from
manufacturer.

3. Installers shall have a minimum of five (5) years proven


experience in the application of the products, systems
and assemblies specified herein.

4. Employ only fully trained and skilled workers and


execute work in strict accordance with railing
manufacturer's requirements.

5. Arrange for railing manufacturer's technical


representative to attend site meeting with Contractor
and Consultant prior to the commencement of the work
to discuss the installation procedures and unique
conditions.

6. Arrange, and make allowance for all inspections and


tests considered necessary by the Consultant.
Inspections and tests may be conducted by the
Consultant and/or his designated representative as
approved by the Owner.

7. Conduct, and pay for, tests required to conform to the


minimum requirements of the Ontario Building Code
and its referenced documents. Confirm all tests and
provide the results to the Consultant immediately upon
availability.

1.6 JOB MOCK-UP

1. Submit a mock-up sample of the railing section for


Consultant’s and Owner’s review and approval prior to
fabrication.

2. Submit paint samples to the Consultant and Owner for


selection of colour for all prefinished aluminum
components.

3. Obtain written approval of mock-up sample of railing


section prior to commencement of the Work.

1.7 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

1. Deliver all materials in original unopened packaging


with manufacturer(s)’ labels intact.

2. Store all materials in such a manner so as to protect


them from precipitation, ground moisture and
temperature extremes by use of weatherproof
coverings and raised platforms. Interior storage shall
be employed when and where necessary.

3. Obtain Owner’s approval of the location and extent of


all on-site storage areas.

4. Handle all materials in a careful manner ensuring that


no unsightly conditions or otherwise damaged material
is incorporated into the Work.

5. Do not stockpile materials on or over suspended


concrete slabs.

6. Take all necessary precautions to protect prefinished


metal surfaces against scratching.

1.8 PROTECTION

1. Before shipment, protect railings and finish surfaces


against damage, crate, wrap or package for shipment
and storage.
2. Take all necessary precautions to ensure paint
surfaces are not scratched during hoisting and
erection.

3. Maintain squareness of railings during hoisting and


installation.

1.9 WARRANTY

1. Guaranty work of this Section against all defects and


deficiencies in materials and workmanship for a five (5)

year period from the date of Substantial Performance


of the Work.

2. Submit each Warranty:

1. identifying the party as warrantor/guarantor.


2. issued in both the Contractor’s and Owner’s names.
3. including labor and materials necessary to remove,
replace, and/or repair the defective products
originally provided as part of the Work and any
adjacent damaged materials.

3. Promptly notify, respond to, and correct, at no expense


to the Owner, any defects or deficiencies that are
reported or become apparent within the warranty
period.

4. Notify the Owner and Consultant, in writing, of the


schedule and particulars related to the execution of
any warranty work.

PART 2: PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

1. Aluminum Railing shall be based on GRECO panel


railing system, with aluminum custom extrusion GAR-
R8 Top Rail.

2. Aluminum Structural Shapes: CSA HA Series-M, Type


6005-T6, Type 6351-T6, or Type 6061-T6.

3. Sheet Aluminum: CSA Type 5052 H32.

4. Aluminum custom extrusions shall be alloy 6005A-T6 or


6061-T6.

5. Fasteners: All screws for fastening aluminum members


shall be corrosive resistant self-tapping screws.

6. Bolts and lag screws shall be stainless steel 304


series. Screws for fastening aluminum members shall
be corrosive resistant self-tapping screws.

7. Bolts and lag screws shall be grade 304 stainless steel


and conform to ASTM A307.

8. Anchors shall be stainless steel 304 series. Anchor


bolts for concrete slabs and walls shall be expansion
anchoring system.

9. Top handrail shall be a rounded profile. All changes in


direction of the top handrail (i.e. at corners, returns,
etc.) shall be equipped with a prefabricated sleeve to
splice the sections of the top handrail together.

Mitering of adjacent sections of the handrail will not be


accepted.

10. All components of railing shall be fabricated of similar


metal. All associated hardware, including shims,
anchor bolts, screws, washers, nuts etc., shall be
corrosion resistant material.

2.2 FABRICATION

1. Fabricate railings square, plumb, straight and true with


all joints neatly and accurately aligned and fastened
and protected with sleeves.

2. Remove burrs from cut sections.

3. Make punches or drilled holes in components clean and


accurately spaced without deformation to components.

4. Fabrication practices shall follow those for steel, as


indicated in CSA/CAN3-S16-14, except as otherwise
modified by CSA/CAN3-S157--05

5. All welding shall be done with gas metal arc welding


(MIG).

6. Welding operators and procedures shall be to CSA


Standard W47.2.

7. Base plates shall have a minimum 10 mm diameter


drain hole.

2.3 FINISHES

1. Finish all aluminum components by polyester


electrostatic powder coating.

2. Pre-treat all metal components as recommended by


coating manufacturer and apply coating in strict
accordance with manufacturer’s printed directions.

3. Ensure appearance is visibly free from flow lines,


streaks, sags, and blisters.

PART 3: EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

1. Before installation, take critical site measurements to


verify dimensions, tolerances, and method of
attachment with other work.

2. Beginning of installation means acceptance of existing


conditions.

Report in writing to the Consultant any conditions that


will adversely affect masonry repairs.

3.2 INSTALLATION

1. Give at least three (3) days written notice to


Consultant and Owner before starting work on site.

2. Conform to the latest Ministry of Labour, Occupational


Health and Safety Act requirements during installation
of the work.

3. Take site measurements to ensure that railings are


fabricated to fit surrounding construction, around
obstructions and projections in place, as shown on the
drawings, and to suit service locations.

4. Install railings plumb, true, square, straight, level, and


accurately and tightly fitted together and to
surrounding construction.

5. Provide stainless steel anchor bolts, washers, nuts,


sleeves, brackets, clips and other items necessary for
secure installation of the railings.

3.3 CLEANING

1. Repair areas of bare metal, welds and shop applied


finishes in field only with the approval of the
Consultant.

2. Clean off dirt on surfaces resulting from installation.


Wash surfaces with a solution of mild detergent in
warm water, applied with soft, clean wiping cloths.
Wipe surfaces clean.

3. Touch up coating where damaged during transport or


installation. Use material approved by the
manufacturer.

3.4 CLEAN UP

1. At the completion of the Work each day remove and


properly store all debris, garbage, and excess
materials. Regularly and frequently dispose of such
material in an approved manner.

2. Upon completion of the Work, clean up all debris,


excess materials, and equipment and remove from the
site.

3. Leave work areas in a tidy safe and secure condition at


the end of each work period.

4. Cleaning shall be in accordance with the requirements


detailed in Section 01 74 00, Cleaning and Waste
Management.
