Professional Overview
Led the end to end space planning process inclusive of planogram creation, macro space
planning, clustered regional assortment modeling and category space assignments and
layouts for new & remodel stores (40-50 a year) across 228 stores operating in 16 states
generating annual revenue of $4.7B. (5 direct reports, team of 40 associates) Average
store size was 67,000 sq./ft.
Delivered a 98% on time performance rate for store planogram sets.
Opened all new stores on time and in stock.
Released new planograms for the entire store bi-annually to support seasonality and
strategic new item launches.
Implemented a “total house review” process that focused on macro space assignments
and merchandise assortment plans for all new and remodel stores ensuring that
assortments were demographically and regionally relevant to meet the needs of the
community.
Developed several new store prototypes to support small market entry, category growth
opportunities, launched branded vendor shops, register queuing and improved sight
lines that elevated the brand and the consumer in-store experience.
Was a key business partner in developing the new EDLP pricing and signing strategy
within Academy, testing the use of different pricing events as well as test and learn
merchandising projects inclusive of product, signing and special fixtures.
Played a key role in overhauling the merchandise assortment planning process working
alongside the merchant, planning and pricing leadership teams, applying space data and
performance metrics to support the post mortem assortment review process and
assortment planning process for future business cycles.
Michaels Arts and Crafts – Irving, TX 2010 to September 2013
Responsible for overall space planning strategy for 1100 stores in the U.S. and Canada
with $4.0B in annual revenue, opening 20-30 new stores annually. (5 direct reports,
team of 37 associates)
Improved in-stocks in front of the customer via the implementation of the “Make it Fit”
project that leveraged forecasted demand and pack size/EOM metrics to establish
required facing counts for top selling items that were tied to allocation min/max levels.
Project also improved store labor performance by reducing repetitive restocking
activity.
Developed three new store prototypes to support operating in small, urban markets and
traditional markets that featured a register queuing concept that reduced perceived
customer wait time and drove an .80bps lift in total store sales. The concept was rolled
out to all stores.
Optimized sku count via an annual rationalization exercise identifying and dropping the
bottom 5% of the item base with no loss in top line sales.
Implemented a seasonal planning process that established accurate life cycles for all
products tied to the price optimization tool that increased sell through and margin rate.
Participated in test and learn efforts in merchandising and pricing. Evaluated elasticity of
pricing offers; percent off, BOGO Free, BOGO with a second item at a percent off
reduction and EDLP.
Implemented dynamic reporting at the space and planogram level in support of the
merchant’s teams to support fact base decision-making.
Functioned as the “Gatekeeper” for all communication sent to the field from the
corporate Office.
Implemented the Operations Planning Committee that streamlined communications
and workload planning.
Total operating responsibility for the Eastern Region, which was comprised of 1,012 stores
operating in 18 markets from Texas to Maine generating annual sales of $356 million on a
wholesale basis. Responsible for top line sales, expense, payroll, and new store growth and
annual profit performance. Dotted line responsibility for two regional distribution centers
totaling one million sq./ft. of leased space, employing over 600 associates.
