Verily, Allâh forgives not that partners should be set up with Him (in worship), but He
forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills; and whoever sets up partners with
Allâh in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin. [Surat An--Nisa:48]
Shirk is the only unforgivable sin in Islam!

The Entire Qur’an is only a call to Tawheed

1. Regarding Allah, His names and Attributes
(Surat Al-Ikhlaas)
2. Command to worship Allah (Surat Al-Al
Kafiroon)
3. Prohibitions or commandments from Allah
(perfection
erfection of Tawheed and how to worship)
4. Narrating the rewards of the people of
Tawheed, past (stories of the Prophets) or
future (Paradise).
5. Narrating the punishments of the People who
rejected Tawheed, past (perished nations e.g.
People of ‘Aad and Thamud),
Thamu or future (Hell).

Tawheed Ar-Ruboobiyyah
Ar
Ruboobiyyah is derived from the root word Rabb (Lord),, which can be defined as:

• The True and complete Owner

• The One Who is obeyed
• The One who nourishes, takes care of everything

Almost every du’aa begins with Rabb,

Rabb, as it is a very personal name by which to call Allah.

Tawheed Ar-Ruboobiyyah
Ruboobiyyah pertains to acknowledging that Allah alone caused all things to
exist from nothing. It is the belief that only Allah creates, sustains and owns the entire
creation without anyy need from it or for it. He alone is the Master, Controller and Nourisher.

Thus we can also refer to this branch of Tawheed as Tawheed of Allah in His Actions, as He
creates, He nourishes; nothing happens in His creation except that which He wills to occur.
occu

In light of this, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) would often repeat the phrase:

‘La hawla wa la quwwata illa billaah’

bill ’
There is no might nor power except by Allah’s will.

Two Types of Ruboobiyyah

1. General Ruboobiyyah
i. Regardless of what you believe, Allah will take care of your needs.
needs No object is
out of the control of Allah.
2. Specific Ruboobiyyah
i. Specific to the Muslims – Allah will take care of your physical and
an spiritual
needs, this provides greater protection than general Ruboobiyyah.

Islamic Proofs for Ruboobiyyah

1. Fitrah – the natural disposition that each person was born with. Islam does not believe
in the concept of original sin. Each child is born pure; it is then their upbringing and
society that changes them. Islam is in line with the fitrah each person is born with.
i. The
he Prophet (SAW) said “Every child is born pure upon the natural disposition
(fitrah).” [Muwatta Imam Maalik]
ii. “And so set your face steadfastly
steadfastly towards the Religion (of pure Islamic
monotheism),, turning away from all that is false, in accordance with the Natural
Disposition which God has instilled into man.” [Surat Ar-Rum:30]
Rum:30]
iii. The covenant (Al-meethaq)
(Al meethaq) each of us has taken with Allah is a manifestation
mani
of this fitrah. “And
And (remember) when your Lord brought forth from the Children
of Adam, from their loins, their seed (or from Adam's loin his offspring) and
made them testify as to themselves (saying): "Am I not your Lord?" They said:
"Yes! We testify,"
stify," lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection: "Verily, we have
been unaware of this." [Surat Al-A’raf:172]
2. Creation – the entire creation is a proof of Allah’s Lordship.
i. “Were they created by nothing? or were they themselves the creators? Or did they
create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they have no firm Belief.”
[Surah Tur:35--36]
ii. “O
O mankind! A similitude has been coined, so listen to it (carefully): Verily! those
on whom you call besides Allâh, cannot create (even) a fly, even though they
combine together for the purpose. And if the fly snatches away a thing from
them, they will have no power to release it from the fly. So weak are (both) the
sought. [Surah Hajj:73]
seeker and the sought.”
3. Signs (ayaat) of the Creation – throughout the Qur’an, Allah h tells us to reflect and
ponder over His creation.
i. “Verily!
Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of
night and day, and the ships which sail through the sea with that which is of use
to mankind, and the water (rain) which AllâhAllâh sends down from the sky and
makes the earth alive therewith after its death, and the moving (living) creatures
of all kinds that He has scattered therein, and in the veering of winds and clouds
which are held between the sky and the earth, are indeed Ayât Ayât (proofs, evidences,
understanding. [Surat Al-Baqarah:164]
signs, etc.) for people of understanding.” Baqarah:164]

4. Innate feeling of helplessness, and turning to a Creator

i. In times of distress and dire need, people turn to Allah to ask for help, even if
they usually are not religious,
religious, don’t pray, or don’t believe in a Creator at all.
ii. “And
And when harm touches man, he invokes Us, lying down on his side, or sitting or
standing. But when We have removed his harm from him, he passes on as if he
touch him!” [Surah Yunus:12]
had never invoked Us for a harm that touched
iii. The Pagan Arabs in the time of The Prophet (SAW) would make sincere du’aa
to Allah alone, in their times of dire need, as opposed to the other idols they
would usually worship.
5. Sending of prophets, Revelation of Books
i. Allah (SWT) sent Prophets to the nations before on His behalfbeha with miracles.
Prophet Musa (AS)
(A was given the miracle of splitting
litting the sea.

Is Ruboobiyyah Alone Sufficient?

Almost every faith, even those that appear to be polytheistic in nature, has a root
concept of belief in One God, but they worship other deities alongside Him or reject
other fundamental aspects of Tawheed.

2. The Jahiliyyah Arabs believed in Allah yet committed shirk
i. “And most of them believe not in Allâh except that they attribute partners unto
Him.” [Surah Yusuf:106]
ii. Ibn Abbass explained the above ayah, stating: Their iman in Allah is if you were
to ask them who created everything they would say Allah, but their shirk is that
they worship other than Allah.
iii. In other words – Their iman: Tawheed Ar Ruboobiyyah..
Their shirk: Tawheed Al Uloohiyyah

3. Excuses of Jahiliyyah
ah Arabs in their worship

Excuse 1: “We are too sinful so need to go through these intermediaries to get to Allah”

“And they worship besides Allâh things that hurt them not, nor profit them, and they say: "These
are our intercessors with Allâh." Say: "Do you
you inform Allâh of that which He knows not in the
heavens and on the earth?" Glorified and Exalted is He above all that which they associate as
partners (with Him)!” [Surah Yunus:18]

Excuse 2: “We only worship these idols so that they bring us closer to Allah.”

“Surely, the religion (i.e. the worship and the obedience) is for Allâh only. And those who take

"We worship them only that they may bring us near to
Allâh." Verily, Allâh will judge between

middlemen – there is a direct

Az connection between you and
Allah!

4. The mushrikoon
ushrikoon would turn to Allah sincerely
in times of distress
i. The Prophet (SAW) had a conversation with a man, asking him h who he
worshipped. The man responded “six on this earth and one in the skies.” The
Prophet (SAW) then asked him who he worshipped when he really needed a
response, and the man replied: “The one in the skies.” After the rasul (SAW)
questioned this line of thinking,
thinking, the man became a Muslim, giving up the
worship of the six gods he worshipped on this earth.
ii. And when they embark on a ship, they invoke Allâh, making their Faith pure for
Him only, but when He brings them safely to land, behold, they give a share of o
their worship to others. [Surat Al-Ankaboot:65]
iii. When a wave covers them like the canopy (of clouds), they call upon Allah,
offering Him sincere devotion. But when He has delivered them safely to land,
there are among them those that halt between (right and and wrong). But none reject
Our Signs except only a perfidious ungrateful (wretch)! [Surah Luqman:32]
5. The mushrikoon believed in Allah as Rabb, but they refused to worship Him
alone.
i. Truly, when it was said to them: Lâ ilâha illa Allâh
llâh "(none has the right to be
worshipped but Allâh)," they puffed
p themselves up with pride (i.e. denied it). And
(they) said: "Are we going to abandon our âlihah (gods) for the sake of a mad
poet? [Surah Saafat:35-36]

6. The Jahiliyyah Arabs talbiyyah during Hajj (said when circumambulating the Ka’bah)

Normal talbiyyah: “Labbaika Allahumma Labbaik. Labbaik La Shareeka Laka Labbaik. Innal-
Hamdah, Wan-Ni’matah, Laka wal Mulk, La Shareeka Lak.”

“Here I am O Allah, (in response to Your call), here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I
am. Verily all praise, grace and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.”

The modified talbiyyah: “Labbaika Allahumma Labbaik. Labbaik illa Shareeka huwa lak
tamlikuhu huwa malak.”

“Here I am O Allah, (in response to Your call), here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, except
a partner who belongs to you, and whom you control, but does not control you.”

SESSION SUMMARY
In essence, the Qur’an came to emphasise
Uloohiyyah (i.e. worshipping Allah alone),
the concept of Ruboobiyyah is a given – the
aim is to raise our level of pure faith.

Ruboobiyyah necessitates
Uloohiyyah!
