Research, Development and Innovation
The University of Szeged

The intellectual potential accumulated at the University of Szeged and the

research conducted here has turned the institution not only into an important
centre of Hungarian higher education, but also a crucial workshop of innovation
in Hungary. The University’s 19 doctoral schools and its internationally respected
research groups participate in high quality education and also organise and
conduct basic and applied research in various areas. The centres of research and
knowledge are in close working relationships and cooperate with renowned
Hungarian and foreign partner organisations. As a result of the cooperation with
the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), 15 research groups in 4 faculties of
the University enjoy the support of the MTA.
The University of Szeged, along with its industrial partners such as companies
engaged in biotechnology, is the driving force of innovation in the Southern
Great Plain region. These partnerships are managed and coordinated by the
University’s Directorate for Research and Development and Innovation.
The University of Szeged is actively involved in drawing up medium- and long-
term programmes (e.g. Biopolisz Pólus) shaping the development of Szeged and
the Southern Great Plain region. The key to the regional strategy for the coming
decades can be the programme based on the cooperation of natural sciences and
various related disciplines. Knowledge-based elements of this programme focus
on the health industry, agricultural biotechnology, environmental technology
and information technology (which also prospers on its own) and support other
scientific developments. The human resources for all these developments are
ensured by constantly expanding and diversifying post-secondary vocational
education and technical education in accordance with European endeavours and
expectations.

ELI
The ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure) Laser Research Centre, using ultrahigh
intensity laser, is being built with international cooperation at three different
East European locations, but will operate under a single management and use
a common research strategy. The Attosecond Light Pulse Source in Szeged will
provide opportunities for researchers to examine the duration of elementary
processes. The main mission of the Attosecond Light Pulse Source, the laser
research institution in Szeged, is to facilitate taking snapshots of electron
dynamics in atoms, molecules, plasmas and biological samples on the timescale
of attoseconds and femtoseconds. Medical diagnostic procedures and particle
beam-based treatment are also among the applications that make use of
this technology. These technologies use laser light or the so-called secondary
light sources emitted by plasma generated in gas or solid target objects. The
foundation stone of ELI was laid in a solemn ceremony on 6 February 2014 in
Szeged.

The greenest Hungarian University

The University of Szeged is the greenest Hungarian university, and on the Green
Universities top list it is ranked 19th in 2014.
What makes a university green? A green university is committed to
environmentally responsible behaviour and environmental consciousness
as an educational concern. Whether in its energy strategy concerning larger
investments or in its everyday climate-friendly activities, the University of
Szeged always attempts to demonstrate through its popular programmes that
the staff and students of the institution take the protection of the environment
seriously. As a result, according to the Indonesian UI Green Metric Ranking of
World Universities, the University of Szeged was found the greenest university
in Eastern Europe in the last years.

43
University Congress Centre

The Congress Centre that opened in January 2005 was founded by the University
of Szeged and the local government. It takes pride in providing a perfect place
for over 1.000 business, cultural and scientific events by hosting the following
facilities:

• 25000 m2 on 6 floors
• the capacity can take up to 1.300 persons at the same time
• the best place to conventions and conferences, university and business
meetings, exhibitions and concerts
• a fascinating and sunlit 1.000 m2 Atrium for gala dinners and professional
exhibitions
• 10 individual lecture and seminar rooms
• sophisticated audiovisual technologies by a high-skilled technical team
• a great variety of Hungarian and international cooking by our catering
partner

The Congress Centre is the premier venue for conventions, meetings and large-
scale events with its 7.000 m2 banquet facility having a capacity of hosting as
many as 1.300 people at the same time. The elegant Congress Hall taken up to
685 people maintains an intimate and interactive presentation environment,
moreover offers a perfect venue for concerts and performances as well.

44
Cultural life

Our annual cultural festivals offer over 500 programmes on average at more than
100 different venues; 320 participants enter the talent-spotting competitions
organised by the university. We have 27 registered amateur artistic groups, such
as choirs, theatre groups and symphonic orchestras.
The cultural events organised by the university complement perfectly the wide
variety of cultural programmes sponsored by the city, as the festivals also attract
audiences outside the university. Since 2000 the Autumn Cultural Festival, and
since 2004 the University Spring have been held annually. At these exhilarating
events students of the university can demonstrate their talents alongside
famous artists at the various premieres, exhibitions and meetings.
The results and rankings of the athletes attending the University of Szeged
clearly demonstrate that the institution is an active and successful participant
in sporting events organised by universities worldwide. Furthermore, the
sporting events that were held over previous years in the city also prove that the
University of Szeged is among the best in the management of sports events. All
these successes reflect the university’s general attitude, that is, besides scientific
results, achievements in competitive and recreational sports are equally
important parts of student life.

Participating in sports events and festivals, attending balls and spending nights
at parties in university clubs are all as much part of the legendary university life
in Szeged as is attending lectures and laboratory classes.

45
Student Life
Being a sportive institution, the University of Szeged offers such a wide variety
of sports activities that the time spent studying at the university proves to be
too short to try out all of them. To mention just some of the less common ones:
every student has the opportunity to try parachuting, horse riding, skiing, yoga;
all in addition to the university’s sports associations where competitions are held
in a number of sports from fencing to basketball. Our men’s basketball team,
SZTE-SZEDEAK, made it to Group B of the First Division NB I in 2007. We are proud
of the many Olympic and world champion athletes, including kayaker Natasa
Janics and water polo player Gergely Kiss, who have chosen the University of
Szeged for their studies. Szeged has frequently been the venue for international
sports events. One of the most prominent of these was the World University
Squash Championship in 2006 with participants from all over the world.
University club meetings, parties and performances, in the JATE-KLUB in
particular, offer rich and pure entertainment to everybody. Szeged’s cultural
life would be unimaginable without these events or the ones staged in student
hostels. Whether looking for a film club or a place to dance or sing, everybody can
find what their hearts desire among the amateur groups and associations of our
university. Events of the Autumn Festival, the University Spring and programmes
of the TIK provide a foretaste of these activities for outsiders as well.
During the carnival season every faculty holds its own ball with music and dance.
One of the most noted ones is the traditional University Charity Ball which has
become one of the most prestigious events of social life in Szeged.
No wonder that after graduation many leaving students miss the joyful
events they experienced during the years spent at the University of Szeged.
To help them feel and enjoy the support of the institution and the warmth of
the university community all their lives, former students can stay constantly
in touch with the university through the Alma Mater organisation. Everybody
who finds it important to participate in university life even after graduation is
welcome to attend the postgraduate course fair, professional and class reunions,
festive events, including the Alma Mater Christmas party, the Alma weekend
and the university sports day.
