Parents’ experience of perfectionism of underachieving gifted children
Purpose:
The purpose of the study is to describe parents’ experience of raising
underachieving gifted kids.
Research question:
How do parents experience perfectionism behavior of their underachieving
gifted kids?
Methodology:
Interpretive phenomenological approach.
Method:
Semi-structured interview.
Participants:
Parents of underachieving gifted students.
Interview questions
Opening questions: informed consent, rapport building, demographic information
(family structure, siblings, age, SES etc.)
Experience questions:
1) Describe please your experience of parenting your gifted child.
Follow-up questions: What expectations do you have for your child’s performance? In what ways do you support and motivate your child? What are your values regarding the education? Did you experience competitive behavior among your children? 2) Describe your experience leading to the thought that your child is a perfectionist. 3) Describe please your memories when your child gained a success. 4) Describe please experience when your child has trouble while doing her/his assignment. What did you think? What were your emotions? How did you behave?
5) Share please your experience when your kids faced failure.
What did you think? What were your emotions? How did you behave? 6) Describe your recent interaction with your kids when you criticized their works. 7) Share your recent memory in which your kids were not satisfied with her work or judge her behavior. 8) Share your recent memory in which your kids faced anxiety while doing an assignment? What did you think? What were your emotions? How did you behave?
