Unit Title: Solving Equations of a Single Variable Name: William Chesney

Content Area: Algebra 1 Grade Level: 9 -10
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
A-REI.3 – Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters.

A-APR.3 - Identify zeros of polynomials when suitable factorizations are available, and use the zeros to construct a rough graph of the function defined by the polynomial.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will be able to look at an equation of a single variable and be able to quickly assess whether the solution exists.
Students will be able to read a word problem and break the problem down into an equation of a single variable.
Students will know when to use which method for solving single variable equations.
Students will be able graph an equation of a single variable.

Unit Summary:

In this unit, students will be learning how to solve and understand single variable linear equations. To prepare students for this unit the teacher will quickly give students a
rundown of all the operations needed to solve these equations. Once students have an understanding of what will be needed of them, students will begin trying to learn the
definitions required to have a deep understanding of the material. The first activity for this unit will focus on the students learning from a presentation prepared by the
teacher to enforce a wholistic understanding of the unit. The next lesson will focus on the ability of students to search online to solve problems relating to single variable
equations. The goal of that lesson is to steer students to being open to look online for help in math as well as giving them an understanding of what kind of websites are
helpful. The last lesson for this unit will call upon the students to create a graphic organizer to link all the information they have learned together. Through creating a
concept map, students will be able to focus on the connections of information that are all over mathematics.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level: Formative: Summative:

Brainstorm – What is needed to use the Isolation Flashcards – Definitions relating to single variable Infographic – Using information from the unit,
Method equations students will create an infographic relating to solving
single variable equations.
Game – Team A vs. Team B, solving questions relating
to single variable equations.
Concept Map – Creating a map to link together ideas Test – 3-part exam evaluating students’ understanding
relating to solving single variable equations. of definitions, the Isolation Method, and how to graph
equations.
Quick Write - How to solve an equation.
