DESIGN RESULT OF BEAM (GROUND FLOOR)
Spacing, s = (Av)(fy)(d)/Vs
If s < 25 mm, increase the value of Av by either using bigger bar size or adding more shear area.
Maximum spacing, s:
(a) When Vs≤1/3√f′c bwd, smax= d/2 or 600 mm
(b) When Vs>1/3√f′c bwd, smax= d/4 or 300 mm
VI. If Vu< φVc but Vu>1/2 φVc:
Minimum area of stirrup, Av = bws/3fy
Where s=d/2 or 600 mm (whichever is smaller)
Shear Reinforcement
Pu = Φ 0.80[0.85f’c(Ag-Ast)
Ag = bxh
Ast = area of steel reinforcement
These maximum load limits govern wherever the moment is small enough to keep the eccentricity under
0.10h where h is the column width parallel to the applied moment.
Limits of Reinforcement for Tied Columns
I. Ast shall not be less than 0.01Ag and Ast shall not be more than 0.06Ag
II. The minimum number of longitudinal bars is 4 for bars within rectangular or circular ties, 3 for bars
within triangular ties.
Size and Spacing of Main Bars and Ties
I. Clear distance between longitudinal bars shall be not less than 1.5db nor 40 mm.
II. Use 10 mm diameter ties for 32mm bars or smaller and at least 12 mm in size for 36mm and
bundled longitudinal bars.
III. Vertical spacing of ties shall be the smallest of the following:
o 16xdb (db = longitudinal bar diameter)
o 48 x tie diameter
o least dimension of the column
IV. Ties shall be arranged such that every corner and alternate longitudinal bar shall have
latera] support provided by the corner of the tie with an included angle of not more than
135° and no bar shall be farther than 150 mm clear on each side along the tie from such a
laterally supported bar. Where longitudinal bars are located around the perimeter of a circle,
a complete circular tie is allowed. (Section 5.7.10.5.3).

Solve for p max and p min
If p is less than p max and greater than p min, use p
If p is greater than p max, increase the depth of slab to ensure ductile failure
If p is less than p min, use p = p min
VI. As = p b d = p(1000)(d)
S1 = (Abar/As) x 1000
Use the smallest of the following for the main bar spacing:
a) S1
b) 3xh
c) 450 mm
VII. Temperature bars
Ast = pt b h
S2 = (Abar/As) x 1000

a) S2
b) 5 x h
c) 450 mm
