Lesson unit/page To find out and recognise unit Student teacher

Khadija Mohammed
fractions, To use reasoning skills.
MST/MCT Taira Astab School Al Yasmina School

Class Date
Year 2 Rowling 28th February 2018
Overall aim and context of the lesson:

The aim of this lesson was to ensure that students are able to find and recognize unit and non-unit fraction word
problems. Also, this lesson focused on enabling students reasoning skills since they will be justifying the answers
of the word problems that they will solve. In addition, more advanced students were introduced to the partitioning
strategy (taught by their classroom teacher) when they are working with bigger numbers. This was to challenge
their abilities and determine how far they can exceed with their knowledge of what they are capable of doing and
what they are not capable of doing.

Choose two aspects from the competency areas to evaluate and discuss (one paragraph each) according to
following

Firstly, discuss one aspect that YOU feel you did very well. Try to analyze why you think it worked well and
what hints you would share with other teachers about the successful strategy/ resource/activity/management
style etc.

Secondly, elaborate on the aspect identified by YOU that requires attention. Discuss what the problem was, why
it occurred and what action you intend to take to be more successful in the next lesson.

Implementing and managing learning was the most aspect I think that I have succeeded with. I know this
because, I taught and worked with emerging students throughout the lesson. Students were responding well
towards the concept that they were learning in fact they were participating and getting involved when I assigned
them with few equations to solve. To elaborate, this lesson was a consecutive lesson that follows their previous
math lesson. My MST informed me that students (lower level) are not ready to move on with the topic due to lack
of understanding and misconceptions. However, when I taught the lesson for the second time, some students were
still not able to process the information but they were trying and getting involved. Also, students were provided to
cubes and concrete materials in order to ease their understanding. Adding to that, I had to teach and redirect the
students more than once in order to make them aware of the steps they need to follow when they are solving the
word problems. Thus, I noticed that students were able to answer the word problems independently at the end but
they needed some time and practice to make sense of the topic they were learning. Such thing proved to me that I
was able to manage and implement their learning in a positive way. Although, they took time to process the
information but most importantly is that I was patient and diligent with them which lead them to succeed with the
concept.
In my opinion, I would share with other teachers that they need to be patient and diligent towards their
students when they are processing new information. This is because, students differ and lower leveled students
must be provided with support, encouragement and time so as to succeed within the new topic. Also, teachers must
make the students believe in themselves and trust their capabilities even if they think they are not capable of
completing the task. Effective teachers are instructors who guide, support and believe in their students no matter
how long they take time to process the information teachers would never give up on them.
Whereas, managing classroom is the aspect that requires attention and improvements. This is because,
students were not following the instructions and I had to redirect them more than once. Although, students were
informed of the classroom rules at the beginning of the lesson and yet they were not following them. In my
opinion, I think such thing occurred because all of the students needed support and I had to go to each student one
by one. Also, while I was supporting students one at a time other students were waiting for me and this lead
negative behavior to occur.
However, this misconception could be enhanced by making the students carry on with other questions if
they were stuck with a specific question. Adding to that, the teacher could bring them all to the carpet area and
redirect all of them of the steps needed to solve the questions. In such way, the teacher will ensure that she
directed all of the students instead of making them wait for her or carry on with other questions that could expand
their misconceptions.

Personal focus for next lesson:

In my future lesson, I will ensure that I redirect all of the students if there was more than one student
struggling in order to clarify their doubts, enhance their misconceptions and avoid their negative behavior from
occurring.
