As well as our well known cus-

tomer service, our team of engi-
neers is also responsible for R&D
within the foundry area and,
over the years, has developed
such well known products as
Ultraseed®, Superseed® Extra
and Preseed™. These have revo-
lutionised the way irons are
produced today as end users ask
for thinner wall sections, higher
strengths and new alloys. In
addition, our research has given
us a unique insight into the
effects of our specialist alloys on
such requirements as machinabil-
ity and mechanical properties.

Products.
Elkem's continued commitment
to research into cast irons has led
to the development of highly
specialised products to resolve
issues within the industry. Super-
seed® Extra, for example, has
been designed to improve tensile
strengths in grey iron castings,
whilst Ultraseed® reduces shrink-
age problems in ductile irons.
Specialist nodularisers, over 120
chemistries are produced by
Elkem, are available to suit every
ladle geometry, pouring tempera-
ture and casting section thick-
ness. In-the-mould nodularisers,
materials designed for thin sec-
tion castings and alloys designed
to help prevent shrinkage are
amongst this range. Elkem’s
nodularisers are produced to very
tight chemical and size specifica-
tions to ensure maximum consis-
tency, minimum consumption
and optimum effectiveness in
use.
New product ranges added to the
Elkem portfolio are Elcast® insert
tablets for grey and ductile iron
production. These cast products
are available in a wide range from
20g to 20kg and are regularly
used by reputed foundries on all
continents.
Preseed™, one of our latest devel-
opments was created based on
fundamental research into the
mechanisms of graphite nucle-
ation.
Preseed™ has proved to be a
highly successful preconditioning
agent leading to improved
graphite morphologies, higher
tensile strengths and reduced
porosity.
Metal Treatment Solutions
Today, castings are becoming
more complex and demanding
and the production challenges
require solutions where close
team working between customers
and suppliers is required.
Elkem has continued to expand
it’s team of highly skilled foundry
support staff and these are now
based locally on each continent.
Their main function is to provide
a back-up service to our local,
well trained sales representatives.
These engineers have geographic
responsibility and thus an in-
depth knowledge of most cus-
tomers’ processes and proce-
dures. This enables accurate
assessment of production issues
within the customer.
Our laboratories in Norway have
the most state-of-the-art facili-
ties for examination of
customer’s cast iron samples,
including a scanning electron
microscope, and may be regarded
as the most comprehensive
industrially-owned center of it’s
kind in Europe.
With the ability to offer advise
and support to our customers,

Charge materials
Elkem Foundry Products Division
has established Mill Street Lim-
ited as an entity to source com-
plimentary foundry materials to
add to our portfolio of products.
Mill St Ltd offers products such
as FeSi, FeCr, FeP, FeS, magnesium
metal, mischmetal, FeMo etc.
Elgraph® is a rapidly soluble re-
carburiser, ideal for both furnace
and trim applications and is also
available from Mill St Ltd.
Prokem™ ladle linings are avail-
able in powder form for easy
application. Prokem™ powder
requires no ramming and very
little curing, thus saving consid-
erable time and energy in replac-
ing a ladle lining.
In conjunction with Pico Techno-
logy, Elkem has developed a cost-
effective process control system
for cast irons. Based on thermal
analysis, this new system will
deliver fast, accurate and record-

Elkem’s long-term commitment
to the iron foundry industry is
best demonstrated by the man-
agement decisions to produce
alloys for the industry on three
continents.
Elkem Foundry China has been
established to produce top
quality MgFeSi alloys for the
domestic Chinese and Far East
markets. This ISO certified plant
also produces the new range of
Elcast® cast inserts for the late
stage inoculation of grey and
ductile irons.
A comprehensive range of
MgFeSi alloys and inoculants are
now produced at Elkem’s facility
at Chicoutimi in Canada. Primar-
ily serving the North American
industry, Chicoutimi has the
ability to provide a rapid and
diverse service to our customers
in this important market.
With growth in the ductile iron
sector forecast for the next
years, Elkem has made an strate-
gic investment of over € 30 Mill
in a new, state-of-the-art facility
for the production of magne-
sium ferrosilicon. Based at the
Elkem owned Icelandic Alloys,
the supply of high quality alloys
to all international markets can
be maintained and capacity
increased from the present levels
to accommodate growth in the
ductile iron sector.
