decided to choose a registered nurse. Though, I am someone that have always being concerned
and passionate about people 's well being when it comes to health issues. So when it comes to
choosing a career now, I think registered nurse is the perfect choice for me because it is not
something that I would be bored with, since the duties and responsibilities are in line with my
passion.
Even though there is a quite difference in duties between senior and junior nurses. However,
registered nurses (RNs) regardless of specially or work setting, treat patients, educate patients
and the public about various medical conditions such as nutrition, personal hygiene and provide
advice and emotional support to patients' family members. Also, a registered nurse 's duty is
"designing and carrying out a treatment plan for a patient and the last duty but not the least, is to
complete and organise records about the patients". (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11
In order to become a registered nurse, there are three typical educational paths to this career - a
bachelor's degree (BSN), an associate degree (ADN), and a diploma from an approved nursing
program. BSN programs take about 4years to complete. ADN programs take about 2 to 3years to
complete. Diploma programs last about 3years. (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Library
Edition, Bulletin 2800.). After weighing the advantages and disadvantages of enrolling in each type
of education program, I have decided to start with ADN. Courses suggested are anatomy,
physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology and other behavioral sciences and
nursing. And after the program, I am going to write a national licensing examination known as
the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) in order to obtain a nursing license
The demand for RNs is expected to grow at 2% to 3% per year, as it has done for the past four
decades, while the supply of RNs is expected to grow very little as large numbers of nurses begin
to retire (Peter Buerhaus, 2010). This makes the overall job opportunities for registered nurse to
be excellent. Being the largest healthcare occupation, Hospitals employed the majority of RNs,
with 60 percent of such jobs. About 8 percent of jobs were in offices of physicians, 5 percent in
home health care services, 5 percent in nursing care facilities, and 3 percent in employment
services. The remainder worked mostly in government, agencies, social assistance agencies, and
educational services. (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Library Edition, Bulletin 2800.) For
RNs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports median annual earnings of $68,450 in May 2016 with benefits
which include paid holidays, paid sick days, educational benefits and dental
care.(https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/home.htm).
Although I can sincerely say that the pay for my career of choice is not one of the top priorities.
However, I am glad to learn that this is a decent paying occupation. I currently live comfortably
in Houston with my family. Going for this profession would not too change my lifestyle, which
means the annual salary should be able to cover all my expenses as a wife. There would be no
need for getting a new house. Perhaps I would be getting a used car for transportation, going for
one or two vacations in a year, saving 10% and other necessary things. Using
monthly expenses would be $3,929, making it $47,148 for the annual expenses and of course tax

in Houston is the highest among these cities. However, I do not think I would like to live in other cities
since I live with my family in Houston already and the offered salary could meet up with my lifestyle.
I have always wanted to give back to the community, I see this career as an opportunity to do so and also
to develop some skills. After doing so much research, I have intended to volunteer myself to help some
communities around me using Volunteermatch.com. They are Registered Dental Hygienist at 2615 fannin
In conclusion, the nursing field is a career path that brings about many options and opportunities of great
value. I have wanted to become a person that helps people with their health issues since a very young age,
and now that opportunity is here for the taking, I have fully researched what it takes to succeed in this
career and various specialties of the practice. The road to being a registered nurse is one filled with
thousands of notes, years of schooling, and many stressful nights, but the reward is one incomparable to
any other. I see this career as having many advantages and few disadvantages. From a personal view,
some of the disadvantage or challenges I foresee is becoming too enclosed in patients' problens, having
awkward hours to work, vulnerable to contacting diseases and also not having enough time for family
and friends. But I don't see these as major problems right now. The biggest advantage would be being in a
career that I find personally rewarding and fulfilling because helping and saving people's lives on a daily
