LITERATURE – NOVEL

Teacher’s notes:
1. This novel section consists of 7 practices.
2. Drill students on how to identify the keywords in the questions.
3. Students should present their answers in three parts – introduction, content and closing.

Student’s Tips:
1. Ask students to identify keywords in the question.

2. For introduction
- students should state the novel and the author.

3. For content
- state ideas / opinions with examples / evidence from the text/ novel.
- For weak students, state at least one or two ideas.
- For average students, use as many ideas as possible.

4. For closing
- conclude by stating personal responses / opinions.

5. Students may answer the question using present or past tense. But, bear in mind they
have to be consistent in using one form of tense throughout their response.

Examination Tips
1. Read the questions carefully.
2. Remember, answers to the first three questions are found in the extract.
3. The fourth Q is usually a personal response. Make sure you make attempt to answer the question.
4. Pay attention to the keyword like ‘word’ / ‘phrase’ / ‘line’. If ONE word is required – Give ONE word
only.
5. Do not leave blanks – write answers for all Qs.

1. Read and understand the questions carefully.
2. Write in paragraphs
- piece of evidence one paragraph Or – one reason one paragraph.

Example:

Introduction  State the novel, the author and main ideas (from the q).
Content  State points
 Provide/support with textual evidence and explanations from the
novel
 Write down at least 3 points

Closing  Conclude your response by stating personal responses/opinions

3. Check your tenses. Make sure you have to be consistent in using one form of tense throughout your
response.
