PROCEDURE

o Firstly, started by selecting New Project Button for a new iCON case.

o Next, a property package window will appear on the screen

 In the window, select All Property Package from the Chemical System
Categories.

 Next, from the Thermodynamic Model drop-down list, Advanced Peng-

Robinson need to be selected.

o Component window is then opened.

 The chemicals being used in this case are entered into the compound list.

 Where the chemical in used are Ammonia and Water

o In the Visio PFD flowsheet, all of the equipment involves in the separation of
Ammonia and Water were insert in the correct order.

o All the information given is keyed in the streams and reactors.

Separation process is one of the key processes in the chemical engineering industry. Separation
process refers to the operations that change mixtures of substances into components of products
with different composition (Judson King, 2013). Examples of much type of separations are
evaporation, distillation, membrane separation and crystallization. In order for separation to be
achieved in a process, many fundamentals and chemical process principles are to meet the
criteria of separating chemicals in mixtures and are mainly in reference to transport processes.
(Geankoplis, 2014). In this simulation, the separation process of ammonia and water is studied to
determine the basic separation processes as well as the uses of equipment that helps in achieving
the desired properties in order for separation to be completed.

At first, the feed, which flows at 4536 kg.mole/hr containing 80 wt% ammonia at 143.6 oC
and 1724 kPa are cooled through a condenser with heat removal rate of 1700 kW. A condenser is
a device that changes the state of a substance for gas to liquid by cooling it. (Hindelang, 2013)
Since the process starts with a flow containing mixed state properties, the condenser is crucial in
condensing the ammonia gas in order for ammonia to be in the same state as water for
preparation of separation. After that, the liquid flow is passed through a valve in order to reduce
the pressure form 1724 kPa to 1034 kPa. The flow is then sent into a flash vessel in order to
separate the components by heat application into two streams, the liquid and vapour stream. A
flash vessel is used for ammonia-water separation compared to distillation column because of
cost-related procedures in the chemical engineering industry.
