SECOND SEMESTER M.TECH DEGREE EXAMINATION, MAY 2017
Civil Engineering
(Geotechnical Engineering)
01CE6206 Finite Element Analysis for Geomechanics
Max. Marks : 60 Duration: 3 Hours

Instructions: 1)Answer any two full questions from each part.

PART A (9 x 2=18 marks)

1. a)Briefly explain the different steps in finite element analysis. [6]

b) Define shape function and what are the characteristics of shape functions. [3]

2. a) Why polynomial type of interpolation functions is mostly used in FEM. [2]

b) Explain briefly about plane strain analysis.

c) Displacement field for a body is given by

[3.5]

(x2+y) i+ (3+z) j+ (x2+2y)k

Write the stress and strain matrices at a point represented by (2,3,1), μ = 0.3 and E= 2x109
N/mm2 [3.5]

3. Derive the shape function for a 3 noded bar element. [9]

PART B (9 x 2=18 marks)

4. Derive the shape function for a six noded rectangular element using Lagrangian
interpolation. [9]

5. State the principle of minimum potential energy and derive the equation for element
stiffness matrix and nodal load vector. [9]

6. Derive the stiffness matrix for a truss element with single DOF at each node using
variational formulation. Assume that the truss is parallel to x- axis and cross sectional area
varies linearly form A1 to A2 from one end to the other. [9]
PART C (12 x 2=24 marks)

7. Discuss in brief about the numerical integration techniques adopted in FEM. [12]

8. Write a brief note on interface elements used for modeling contact surfaces. [12]

9. 3 springs are assembled in a collinear manner as shown in figure. Nodes 1 and 4 are fixed
and axial loads of 10 and 20kN are applied at nodes 2 and 3. Determine the displacements at
nodes 2 and 3. [12]
