ASSIGNMENT 𝟕
Due: Next tutorial

1. Give an example in which the nonzero force acts on an object, but the work done by that force is zero.
zero

2. For the shown forces opposite to the displacement 180<

180<φ<0, the value of the work is--------------------
--------------------
a) Positive
b) Negative
c) Zero
d) Maximum

3. A block of mass m = 5.0 kg is pulled along a rough horizontal surface by a rope

as sketched in figure. The tension in the rope is 40 N, and the coefficient of
kinetic friction between the block and the surface is 𝜇 = 0.25 . If the block
travels a distance of 4.5 m along the surface
surface.

(a) What is the work done on the block

block?
(b) What is the work done by the friction force only?

4. An air hostess pulls her trolley bag for a distance of 45 m by exerting a force of 4 N at an angle of 40° with the
horizontal. How much work does she do on the trolley bag? What is the angle can form the maximum work, and
in this case what is the maximum work?

5. A car (m = 1200 kg) is traveling at an initial speed of 15 m/s. It then slows to a stop over a distance of 80 m
due to a force from the brakes. Consider the deceleration is constant.
(a) How much work is done on the car?.
(b) Find the net force on the car .

6. A tow truck pulls a car of mass 1200 kg to repair shop several miles away. As part of this journey, the tow
truck and car must travel on a highway, and when entering the highway they accelerate uniformly as they
merge into traffic. They have an initial speed of 10 m/s when they enter the merge ramp and a final speed

of 30 m/s when they leave the merge lane and enter the highway. The length of the merge lane is 20 m.
Find the work done on the car.

7. A farmer hitches her tractor to a sled loaded with firewood and pulls it a distance of 20 m along level
ground. The total weight of sled and load is 14700 N. the tractor exerts a constant 5000 N force at angle
36.9 o above the horizontal. A 3500 N friction force opposes the sled’s motion. Find:

(a) The work done by each force acting on the sled and the total work done by all the forces.
(b) Find the sled’s final speed if the initial speed is 2 m/s.

8. Consider the car in figure. The car starts at

position A with an initial height hA = 20 m and
speed vA = 15 m/s. Find :
(a) The speed of the car when it reaches the
top of the track at position B, where hB = 25
m, and
(b) The speed of the car when it reaches the
bottom of the track, where hC = 0.

9. An object A of mass 2kg, moving with velocity 12m/s in +x direction , collides head-on with a stationary object A
whose mass is 6kg . Given that the collision is elastic, what is the final velocity of the object B if the final velocity
of object A is 6m/s in –x direction

10. Two gliders with different masses move toward each other
on a frictionless air track as shown in the figure. After they
collide, as elastic collision, the glider B has a final velocity of
+2m/s.
(a) What is the final velocity of glider A?
(b) Find the changes in velocity and momentum.

Homework

11. A person pushes a broom at an angle of 60° with respect to the floor. If the person exerts a force of 30 N
directed along the broom handle, what is the work done by the person on the broom as he pushes it a
distance of 5.0 m?

Summary of equations:

Force is constant and in same direction of displacement:

𝑊 = 𝐹𝑠
Force is constant and not in same direction of displacement:

𝑊 = 𝐹𝑠 cos (∅)
Work in general:
1 1
𝑊 =𝐾 −𝐾 = 𝑚𝑣 − 𝑚𝑣
2 2
Conservation of energy in gravity case:
1 1
𝑚𝑣 + 𝑚𝑔ℎ = 𝑚𝑣 + 𝑚𝑔ℎ
2 2
Conservation of momentum:
𝑚 𝑣 +𝑚 𝑣 =𝑚 𝑣 +𝑚 𝑣
The velocity with sign (+ or -). It depends on direction of motion
