JOB DESCRIPTION

Qualification:

The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) are NP’s trained and educated to administer

advanced nursing care to the patients, who are acutely and chronically ill. ACNP’s practice in

acute and critical care settings, which include intensive care units (ICU), urgent care, clinics, and

subacute care units.

 The ACNP’s are required to have national certification with a successful completion of

the master’s program.

 Graduates after completion of the masters from an accredited program should pass the

examination that is given by the American Nurses of credentialing Center or American

Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

 Current advance cardiac life support (ACLS) and basic life support (BLS) certified.

 Current DEA license.

Role and Responsibilities:

Clinical practice:

 Obtaining comprehensive histories and performing physical examinations and other

screening activities related to the health assessment.

 ACNP’s will manage Patients with acute and chronic illnesses are diagnosed, treated, and

managed.

 Ordering and interpreting laboratory values and imaging studies.

 Prescribing the patient’s medications, advanced therapeutic interventions, and durable

medical equipment.

 Developing specialized skills in the performance of the procedures, such as intubation,

insertion and removal of chest tubes, insertion of the arterial and central lines,

paracentesis, cardioversion, wound care, and suturing.

Leadership:

 ACNP takes the role of the leadership and ensures that the patient, family, and the health

care team to collaborate and include patient preferences in the care of the patient.

 Health promotion, disease prevention, health education, and counseling are the part of the

ACNP’s responsibilities.

 Maintain inter-professional relationship with the other health care team and collaborate

and communicate with the members.

 Teaching, providing referrals, and counselling to the patients and family members.

Research:

 ACNP incorporates the scientific evidence and evidenced-based care and formulate the

goals and outcomes related to the evidence based practice.

 Evidenced based interventions are used by ACNP to restore the health and meet patient

goals.

Education and regulation:

 Regulation is achieved by self-regulation, certification, peer review and the rules and

regulations of the state practice act.

 ACNP’s exercise autonomy within their scope of practice, which is based on the

knowledge, accountability for practice, and the willingness to commit to self-regulation.

 Successful completion of the masters’ program with appropriate course content and

specified number of hours of supervised clinical practice.

 The next component of the certification is to pass the written or computer based test,

which is based on the advanced practice.

 ACNP should meet the established standards of quality and patient safety, which may

include the completion of the educational requirements of the certification, and the

renewal and demonstrate the competence of advanced practice.

Reporting:

The ACNP reports to the APP supervisor or the collaborating physician and follows the chain of

command.
