The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

In addition to organizing this awards program on behalf of the diocese, the


Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry (OY&YAM) directs the biennial Diocesan
Youth Convention (DYC) in even-numbered years (next one on Sunday, November 4,
2018) and the diocesan delegation to the National Catholic Youth Conference
(NCYC) in the odd years (November 21 - 24, 2019) in Indianapolis, Indiana, as well
as other periodic programs like the Diocesan 75th Anniversary Youth Masses this
autumn (August 26, September 30 and October 7).

The OY&YAM provides resources to parishes and Catholic agencies within


the diocese to assist with outreach to high school teens and those in their twenties
and thirties.

As an Eagle of the Cross recipient, you are now invited to join the Facebook

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST Daniel V. Sheldon Our Lady of Peace, Ashtabula
Junior St. John Catholic School
PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS Daniel has assisted with the CCD program since he was in the 7th grade helping in the office,
class retreats and prayer services. He is a music minister, Eucharistic Minister* and altar
server. He has participated in Project Grow and the LEAF Project helping clean yards and
painting houses. He was on the Youth Ministry Core Team for three years leading prayer,
organizing events and leading small retreat groups.

Anna Kathleen Vaughn St. Peter, Canton


Senior Canton Central Catholic High School
Anna serves as lector, altar server and Catechist in our CCD program. In addition to volunteering
with Hammer and Nails, she helped repair homes during three Appalachian Mission trips. As a
morning-prayer leader she helps choose the PA prayers that start the day for the entire CCHS
community. She is a deeply spiritual person who cares about expressing and sharing her faith
and making life better for others.

Hunter J. Vogley St. Michael the Archangel, Canton


Junior Canton Central Catholic High School
Hunter is a leader in our Life Teen Youth Ministry program assisting in planning retreats,
providing input in meetings and helping other teens. He is a Eucharistic Minister* and has been a
sponsor in the RCIA program. He works with the parish director of Social Justice/Outreach
ministry planning service projects. He has attended the yearly week-long mission trips to help
build homes and spread ministry to others.

Dante Zamarelli St. Mary, Warren


Junior John F. Kennedy Catholic School
Dante is a strong supporter of Right to Life attending the March for Life held in Washington,
DC. He has participated in the Living Water project raising awareness of the water crisis in our
world; the money raised is sent to Kenya, Africa to help build wells. Dante treats others with
the utmost respect. He has served at the St. Vincent dePaul Kitchen and has delivered meals for
the county mobile meals.

Justin Michael Phares Our Lady of Peace, Ashtabula EUCHARISTIC ACCLAMATIONS MASS OF CREATION, HAUGEN
Junior Edgewood High School
Justin has said that he is proud to be a student athlete and musician but he wants people to know
that he is a Christian and acts accordingly. He was on the Youth Ministry Core Team for three
years and helped develop the Youth Ministry schedule. He has participated in many Project Grow
programs helping to make community improvements and attended a Kentucky mission trip.

Derek Randolph St. Jude, Columbiana


Senior Columbiana High School
Derek has helped with all levels of our CCD classes and oversees the altar servers. He is a
cantor for weekly mass as well as a Eucharistic Minister*. He has been on numerous mission trips
and Marches for Life. He has been discerning the priesthood for some time and has spoken
openly about that possibility. This openness has left open the door for others to do the same.

Teresa Roth St. Joseph, Massillon


Senior Perry High School
Teresa has been a member of our teen leadership at Ignite Youth Ministry for three years. She
has served Thanksgiving meals at the Salvation Army and volunteered at Meals on Wheels. She
has been on mission trips in service to the people there and is always looking for ways to engage
others in the faith. On her first trip to NCYC, she remarked that Adoration there “…was the
most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen!”

Dana Sackett Assumption, Geneva


Junior St. John Catholic School
Dana is a member of the Praise Band that plays at school masses, nursing homes and parishes.
She is also a student rep on the school Liturgy Committee. She is a sacristan, Eucharistic

Minister*, lector and music minister at school. She was on the Youth Ministry Core Team for
three years giving witnesses, running meetings and planning events. At the parish, Dana was a
VBS group/station leader.

Anna K. Sevek St. John the Evangelist, Summitville


Senior Southern Local High School
Anna has attended the Diocesan Youth Convention and National Catholic Youth Conference and
has been an active contributor for the fund-raising projects that were needed to send students
to these events. During her many years on sports teams, she has led her teammates in prayer
before every game. She has helped plan and put on our bi-annual church Youth Retreat and has
been an altar server.

AMEN Joshua Leggett Corpus Christi, Conneaut
Senior Conneaut High School
Joshua is a faith-filled scholar athlete. Before sporting events he takes a moment to pray. At
Thanksgiving and Christmas he helps prepare parish to-go boxes and delivers them to shut-ins of
the community. Josh thrives on helping others in need. He has been a Lions Club Safety Town
instructor for three years. He is a fine example of what it means to be an involved Catholic
Christian.

Amanda N. Leone St. Edward, Youngstown


Senior Ursuline High School
Amanda has been an altar server at her school and parish for 10 of her 17 years. She has been a
babysitter and Camp Fitch counselor and enjoys working with children. She lives the charism of
St. Angela Merici in terms of hospitality in words and actions. She has been a volunteer in her
COMMUNION RITE community through service groups at her school. She makes people want to be better.

Phillip Loges Blessed Sacrament, Warren


THE LORD’S PRAYER
Senior John F. Kennedy Catholic School
Phillip has many volunteer hours for the parish Vacation Bible School, the iPlunge mission trip and
SIGN OF PEACE Kairos retreats. He has been involved in liturgical ministries such as altar server, mass planning,
greeter and Eucharistic Minister*. He has volunteered for the Relay for Life, JFK’s Annual
Water Walk, soup kitchen and local neighborhood clean-up.
LAMB OF GOD (LANDRY)
Kristin Marie Marsinek St. Joan of Arc, Streetsboro
Senior Walsh Jesuit High School
Kristin has been a vital part of our CHAOS Youth Ministry program. She has served as
Eucharistic Minister* at her parish and school. She has been a leader at Vacation Bible School,
has passed out food to the homeless and has visited nursing homes through the Gonzaga
program. She is on the Core Team for summer mission trips to Kentucky. She is an inspiration to
many and focusses on justice for others.

Lauren Pepperney Holy Family, Poland


All Eagle of the Cross Recipients are asked to remain in the Church Senior Poland Seminary High School
Lauren is an active Youth Ministry member at her parish taking part in activities that benefitted
following Mass for group pictures. Please gather in the front pews at the a retirement home and Angels for Animals. She has volunteered on mission trips to Cumberland,

Senior Cardinal Mooney High School
Katrina is our student liturgy planner and leader of the music ministers. In her Christian Service
course, she went into the community and served the elderly, children and the poor. She brings
joy and compassion to all those she meets. She is a member of the Celebrate team at her parish
and is the music director at St. John. She lives by the motto: “What would Jesus do?”

E. Clark Hergenrother St. Charles Borromeo, Boardman


Senior Cardinal Mooney High School
Clark is an active member of his parish Youth Ministry program and is a team leader for the
Celebrate retreat. He helps with school outreach projects to the poor and underserved. In his
Christian Service course, he went into the community and served the elderly, children and the
poor – bringing compassion to all those he served. He reflects his core values and commitment to
Jesus Christ by the way he acts.

Luke David Tarcisius Hetzel St. Charles Borromeo, Boardman


Senior Boardman High School
Luke has been a parish altar server and reader. He joined our Ablaze youth ministry right after
Confirmation and has become one of the leaders. He was part of a Kentucky mission trip that
aided an elderly couple by making improvements on their home. He stands out as a seeker in a
world of complacency and apathy. As a member of the senior Celebrate team he helped write
the theme lyrics.

Katherine Louise Hiestand Christ the Servant, Canton


Senior St. Thomas Aquinas High School
Katherine has volunteered at a local women’s shelter and for Habitat for Humanity. She is both
Lector and Eucharistic Minister* at her school. She is an excellent student, a leader by example,
a person of innate integrity, humility, graciousness and openness to God. She is the “Mama Bear”
for this year’s Kairos team after being unanimously chosen. She is one godly young lady.

Chase Michael Kufchak St. William, Champion


Junior Bristol Local High School
Chase is a student volunteer for Akron Children’s Hospital and was an organizer for a drive that
collected nearly 1,000 books for the kids. He is the youth representative on Parish Council. He
is dedicated to his family, church and school community. As a member of the Beta Club, he
delivered food to those in need at Thanksgiving and was part of a fundraiser for a local family
who lost their home in a fire.

Maddie has a passion to make other people’s lives better. She constantly challenges her
DISMISSAL classmates to think beyond themselves and how they could make the world a better place. She is
involved in a Theology Club called Acts 29 and is member of the Praise Band. She has
participated in the LEAF Project and Project Grow; both groups are for beautifying the local
community by doing yard work and painting.

Carmella Marie Donofrio St. Christine, Youngstown


Senior Ursuline High School
Carmella has served her school in music ministry, as lector, cantor, altar server and Eucharistic
Minister*. As a Student Ambassador she represents the school for the general public in school
tours and community events. When making decisions about how to act, Carmella considers the
consequences and responds accordingly. She organized two events that contributed to the
school’s emergency fund.

Gannon Alan Fridley St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Warren


Junior John F. Kennedy Catholic School
Gannon is a very inspirational young man – always has a positive attitude and goes out of his way
to help others. He is an altar server, lector and Eucharistic Minister* at his school. He has
volunteered for Mobile Meals and the St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen. He would frequently lead
the class reciting the rosary. He is open to guidance from church, family and friends.

Madison A. Gasparik St. Joseph, Alliance


Senior Alliance High School
Madison has been very involved with her parish Youth Group and has taken a leadership role; she
has also been serving on the Stark County YM team. She helps serve monthly dinners for the
poor and hungry. Madi’s tremendous zeal to learn, her dedication to her church and her service
to the Alliance community are a testimony to her hunger for knowledge, good character and love
and compassion for others.

Marissa Rosina Gray Blessed Sacrament, Warren

Marissa is a kind and gentle soul who brings a sense of calm to those around her. She has been a
lector for school liturgies since junior high. She has been chosen to be a Camp Fitch Counselor
for younger students. She has helped raise funds for the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry and
volunteers her time in the summer as a group leader for Vacation Bible School.
