Objective
Integrity of engineering components and structures
used in power, defence, aerospace, chemical and
other safety-critical industries is an important
aspect, as it affects the performance, durability and
safety of operations. Further, structural integrity
assessment is very important from the view point
of reliability and economics of operation.
Structural integrity is a multidisciplinary domain
encompassing mechanical design, materials
selection and characterization including corrosion,
stress analysis, fabrication involving materials
processing including additive manufacturing,
quality assurance, non-destructive evaluation,
damage mechanics, failure analysis etc.
ICONS-2018 will be the second in a series of
International Conferences on Structural Integrity
and will be held during December 14-17, 2018.
The conference aims to bring together the multi-
disciplinary community of engineers, scientists,
academicians, industry experts, plant managers and
regulatory personnel to discuss the recent trends
and future directions in structural integrity. The
scope of ICONS-2018 includes, but is not limited
to:
 Fatigue and fracture mechanics of metals,
composites, bio and nano materials, steel and
concrete structures.
 Mechanical behaviour of materials
 Experimental , computational and analytical
methods in fatigue and fracture assessment
 Failure analysis
 Creep and creep-fatigue interaction
 Environmental effects
 Structural health and condition monitoring &
Non-destructive evaluation
 In-service inspection, remote handling and
robotics
 Reliability, risk assessment
 Regulatory aspects, Development of Test
standards, Design Codes and Standards
 Fracture based design and analysis on

ICONS-2018 is being jointly organized by the
Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research
(IGCAR, Kalpakkam, India,
http://www.igcar.gov.in), the Society for
Failure Analysis (SFA),
http://www.sfaindia.org) together with Indian
Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai,
Indian Structural Integrity Society (InSIS),
Bangalore and Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore.
IGCAR, the second largest establishment of the
Department of Atomic Energy (DAE,
http://www.dae.gov.in/), is engaged in
conducting broad based multidisciplinary
programme of scientific research and advanced
engineering, directed towards the development
of sodium cooled Fast Reactors and associated
fuel cycle technologies in India, with a special
emphasis on various aspects of materials,
manufacturing and structural integrity.
SFA serves as a National Society to promote,
encourage and develop the growth of “Art and
Science of Failure Analysis” and to stimulate
interest in compilation of a database, for
effective identification of root causes of
failures and their prevention as well as to
disseminate information concerning
developments in related fields. SFA organises
lectures, discussions, conferences, seminars,
colloquia, courses related to failure analysis
and provides feedback on failure analysis to the
professional community. SFA serves as a
common platform for individuals, institutions,
organizations and industries to exchange the
rich experience of experts who have had the
opportunity to analyse the wide spectrum of
failures.
The Indian Structural Integrity Society (InSIS),
a professional society focusing on subjects
contributing to adoption of the best
technologies in the area of Structural Integrity,
the multitude of interconnected disciplines that
together determine safety, durability and
robustness of everything that works and moves.
It acts as the agency representing India to the
International Congress on Fracture (ICF)
through its executive.
Abstracts/Proceedings
300-400 words (text only) abstracts clearly
indicating the work carried out and salient
results are invited in the subject areas listed in the
previous pages of the brochure using online
abstract submission system. Website:

Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to
submit (up to a maximum of eight page) full length
manuscripts. The template for extended abstract
and full length paper will be available in the
website. The peer reviewed full length papers wi11
be published as a special volume in Springer
Lecture Notes in Mechanical Engineering. A
selected few papers from these will also be
published in special issues of reputed/Scopus
indexed journals.
Conference Structure
Conference is structured with plenary lectures,
keynote lectures and several invited lectures apart
from contributed papers as podium / poster
presentations. Plenary and keynote lectures would
be held at the main auditorium while oral
presentations would be in parallel sessions. Two
special sessions devoted to posters are scheduled
on days 2 and 3. To encourage young participants,
several oral and poster presentation awards are
planned.
Conference Policy on Presentations
At least one author of the paper is expected to
register and participate in person to present the
paper.
A maximum of two presentations will be permitted
for a registered delegate.

Venue
The conference will be held at the Indian
Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), Chennai.
IIT Madras, Chennai is one of the top ranked
technical institutes of national importance well
known for its higher technological education,
basic and applied research. The Institute has
sixteen academic departments and a few
advanced research centres in various disciplines
of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly
100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of
functioning. The beautiful campus of IITM well
known for its flora and fauna/ bio-diversity is
located in the city of Chennai, previously known
as Madras. Chennai is the state capital of
Tamilnadu, a southern state of India.
Chennai has good connectivity by air, train, road
and sea. Several International carriers connect
Chennai with the rest of the world with multiple
flights per day.
Chennai has the best beaches (Marina Beach,
Elliots beach) where sun-rise is worth watching.
There are several famous shrines in the city
which attract tourists and visitors. December is
perhaps the best season to visit Chennai as there
are several music, dance festivals held in the city
and around as part of the ‘Marghazhi’ festivities.
The temperature will be salubrious with a high
of 27 °C and low of 20 °C.
