Effects of Krakatoa Activity

Directions: Answer the questions about volcanoes and Krakatoa and then color the images to
show what it would look like if you had been there to see the eruption of Krakatoa.

1. What causes a volcano? What happens when one erupts?

Acceptable answers:
-Plates moving together and one goes under the other, convergent plate
boundaries
-Lava comes out of the top and flows over the mountain and land
-Ashes go into the sky and cover everything around the area

2. How does it affect the atmosphere? Does the temperature get warmer
or colder? How does the sky look different?

-Temperatures drop
-Intense colorful sunsets
-Lots of precipitation

3. What is a tsunami? How is it started?

Acceptable answers:
-A giant wave
-An earthquake in the ocean

4. What happens to the plants and animals after a volcano?

Acceptable answers:
-Immediately after, ash covers them and can destroy all of them
-Eventually, the ash gives the soil lots of nutrients for the plants to grow
back
-This changes depending on how much rain is in the region
-Ocean animals can suffer because of the decreased temperatures nin the
ocean

Before the Eruption

Can be just a normal scene with a mountain, blue water, blue sky
and white clouds, normal sun, grass/plants and aminals etc.
 Right After the Eruption

Lava coming out of the volcano and onto the land, ashes in the sky
obscuring the sun, ashes in the water, lava flowing over the land
with plants and animals getting destroyed or covered in ash/lava
 Three Years After the Eruption

Mountain will look normal again, the sun should be a bright color,
on land plants should be starting to grow back but not as much as
before the eruption and animals can appear again.
