This unit aims to develop learners’ understanding of theoretical approaches to media production
In order to inform their own practice and set it within a wider context.
Scenario
As a BFI researcher you are required to undertake a special subject for investigation in a medium of your
choice. Your brief is to research creative media products in the context of their reception: including
films; television programmes; newspapers, magazines, books; interactive media and cross-platform. You
may narrow the focus to one product or genre providing it allows you to fully realise the scope of the
investigation. A 250 word rationale on a creative media product or products you intend to research
further from films; television; books; newspapers or other justifying relevant reception analysis
approaches to content and audience to explain and analyse the particular audiences your product appeals
to and why.
Your research should include an applied understanding of theoretical approaches to content including
representation, genre and narrative theory and audience theories including uses and gratifications,
active or passive, fan culture, ethnography and effects debates that you can use to interpret and
analyse findings. Present your research findings by linking both content and audience theories to a
studied critical reading of selected texts chosen as your special subject for investigation in a medium of
your choice.
