Functional Intervention Occupational Therapy Kit Description

Occupation/ Impairment that Kit Visual Perception while practicing functional activity of matching
Addresses socks and hanging them to dry. This activity also addresses
cognitive deficits and fine motor coordination and can be used to
work on memory.
Itemized list of contents in kit 208 “socks,” bag of rubber bands, bag of clothes pins, 2 expo
markers, directions.

Pictures of all components of kit

Instructions for use of kit 1) Take all contents out of bin and place bin on its side, with
the top facing patient. Wrap both rubber bands around
the bin horizontally to hang the socks on. If working with a
patient with higher cognition, they may do this set up on
their own.
2) Decide whether you would like to perform a low,
moderate, or high level cognitive activity with the patient
and pull out those directions.
3) Pull required socks out of bag (depending on chosen
activity) and lay out/mix up on table in front of patient, in
front of bin.
4) Per chosen directions, ask patients to match socks in pairs
and hang them on the rubber bands with the clothes pins.

Examples of intervention 1. For a patient with low cognition, display 20 socks of

activities different designs or colors and ask the patient to match up
socks in pairs based on matching designs or colors and
hang them with the clothes pins to dry.
2. For a patient with moderate cognition, display 30 socks of
various attributes and ask the patient to match up socks in
pairs based on matching numbers, letters, designs, or
colors and hang them with the clothes pins to dry.
3. For a patient with high cognition, display 40 socks of
various attributes and ask the patient to hang the socks
individually with clothes pins to replicate the given guide.
4. For a patient with high cognition, display 40 socks of
various attributes then give them a specified amount of
time (30 seconds) to look at a guide. Take the guide away
and ask the patient to replicate the socks on the guide to
work on memory in addition.

How kit can be graded for low To address patients with various cognitive levels, directions for
and high level patients activities have been given for patients with low, moderate, and
high cognitive levels. So to grade down, use the low cognitive
activities and to grade up use the high cognitive activities. Activities
can also be graded by changing the distance from midline that
socks are laid out on the table – moving socks more outward will
increase use of shoulder external and internal rotation, elbow
extension, and fine motor coordination as well as visual perception
to grade activities up while moving socks closer to midline will
grade activities down.
