Course Description
Fossil fuels are the main resources for the electrical supply in the kingdom and the
depletion of these resources has been identified as a national challenge. Renewable
energy is considered as one of the most valuable alternative sources to decelerate the
rate of depletion of conventional energy resources. Moreover, there is a crucial
necessity for more reliable and sustainable energy systems and sources due to the
increase in electric demand and complexity of power grids. Governments and
responsible organizations are moving toward building a highly efficient and reliable
power systems, commonly known as smart grids. The smart grid presents an
extraordinary challenge for the business of electric generation and delivery and
requires new models and techniques to operate and analysis the system.
This course will present and discuss fundamental principles, concepts, contexts,
issues, applications and future developments of Smart grids and sustainable Energy
Systems from the multidisciplinary perspectives. The course will provide a detailed
analysis of technical and technology aspects of Sustainable Energy Systems and smart
grids, including energy conversions, smart metering infrastructure, demand side
management, electric vehicles, and transition from conventional to renewable energy
resources in different sectors.
