K-12 Leadership

February 22, 2018

Grounding Activity
On your own, write about a time when you struggled as a
learner, but eventually found success.

● What were you trying to learn?

● What was difficult for you?
● How did you address this challenge?
● What helped you learn?
Grounding Activity
Four Corners
In the four corners of the room, you will find four research-based best practices
for struggling learners:

1. Support cognitive processing (self regulation and memory)

2. Increase learning time
3. Reduce group size
4. Intensifying Instructional delivery - making it more explicit and systematic
and increasing opportunities for feedback

Go to the corner where you can identity getting help when you struggled as a
learner. Have a conversation with someone in that corner about what worked for
you, and then switch. Each group will share out.
Objectives for today:
● Understand first best instruction (FBI)
and the MTSS Tiers
● Practice reflective coaching

MTSS defined...
In California, MTSS core components work together to create an integrated,
comprehensive framework that focus on the Common Core State Standards
(CCSS), core instruction, differentiated learning, student-centered learning,
individualized student needs, and the alignment of systems necessary for
academic, behavior, and social success. MTSS offers the potential to create
needed systematic change through intentional design and redesign of
services and supports that quickly identify and match the needs of all
students in general education contexts.
