2 Two parallel circular plates of radius 𝑎𝑎 are located at 𝑧𝑧 = 0 and 𝑧𝑧 = 𝑑𝑑. The top plate (𝑧𝑧 = 𝑑𝑑)
is raised to potential 𝑉𝑉0 ; the bottom plate is grounded. Between the plates is a conducting
material having radial-dependent conductivity, 𝜎𝜎(𝜌𝜌) = 𝜎𝜎0 𝜌𝜌, where 𝜎𝜎0 is a constant.
a) Find the 𝜌𝜌-independent electric field, 𝐄𝐄 ⃑, between plates.
b) Find the current density, 𝐉𝐉⃑ between plates.
c) Find the total current, 𝐈𝐈, in the structure.
d) Show that the resistance between the plates is: 𝑅𝑅 = 3𝑑𝑑/(2𝜋𝜋𝑎𝑎3 𝜎𝜎0 ) [Ω]
Hint: use

3. Given a current density 𝐉𝐉⃑ = 0.3𝐚𝐚𝐲𝐲 + 0.4𝐚𝐚𝐳𝐳 [A/cm2 ], find the total current crossing
the cylindrical surface defined by 𝜌𝜌 = 2 [cm], 0 ≤ 𝜙𝜙 ≤ 𝜋𝜋, and 0 ≤ 𝑧𝑧 ≤ 2 [cm].

4. Application: Lossy Coaxial Cable. In a coaxial cable of length 𝐿𝐿, the inner conductor is of radius
𝑎𝑎 [m] and the outer conductor of radius 𝑏𝑏 [m], and these are separated by a lossy dielectric with
permittivity 𝜺𝜺 [F/m] and conductivity 𝜎𝜎 [S/m]. A DC source, V0 [V], is connected with the positive
side to the outer conductor of the cable. Neglecting edge effects determine:

5. Application: Velocity of Electrons in Conductors. The free electron density in copper is 8 ×

1028 𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒/𝑚𝑚3 . A copper cable, 30 mm in diameter, carries a current of 3000 A. Find the
drift velocity of the electrons. R/. 0.33 × 10−3 m/s.
6. Application: Ground Resistance of
Electrodes. A ground electrode is built in
the form of a hemisphere, of radius 𝑎𝑎 =
0.1 m, buried in the ground, flush with
the surface as shown in Figure. Calculate
the contact resistance (resistance
between the wire and surrounding
ground). You may assume the ground is a uniform medium semi-infinite in extent, with
conductivity σ = 0.1 S/m. Hint Calculate the resistance between the hemisphere and a
concentric conducting surface at infinity. Note: This is an important calculation in design of
lightning and power fault protection systems.
