Oppenheimer, a Westchester Democrat, chairs the Senate Education Committee. This week, she
announced hearings into how standards for the scoring of student achievement tests were allowed to
deteriorate over the years.
As Westchester parents, we care deeply about education. So it’s upsetting When more accurate benchmarks were put into place this year by state Education Commissioner David
Steiner, achievement numbers cratered and New York’s public-education cartel expressed profound shock
to learn that our school standards are being weakened in Albany. It’s even (while laughing up its collective sleeve, of course).
more disturbing to learn that our own state senator is helping weaken them Oppenheimer, who presided over the Education
Committee much of the time while the slide progressed,
at the behest of the Teacher’s Union. seems to have been sufficiently embarrassed by the new
numbers to order the probe.
We pay the highest property taxes in New York State, yet our kids continue One would think getting to the truth would
to get short changed. be the focus of Oppenheimer’s hearings.
WRONG.
She’s planning to subpoena Steiner -- who has been on

 Highest Taxes? the job for little more than a year -- but not the man who
oversaw the corruption from the beginning.

 Least Funding? Why isn’t Richard Mills -- who only ran the state
Education Department for 15 years, and who might have
something useful to add -- scheduled to appear?

 Weaker Classroom Standards? Suzi Oppenheimer Oppenheimer says, “I see no value in it. He did what was
best back then.”
What was best for the education cartel, maybe -- especially the teachers
unions. They hate being called to account, and they own Oppenheimer, body

There is something wrong with this! and soul.

Earlier this year she was pushing through what the Senate Democratic majority disarmingly called
“Education Mandate Relief Act” -- which relieved no significant mandates, but which did give local school
districts the power to evade statutory property-tax limits.

YEARS IS ENOUGH That way, the teachers get their annual pay hikes even as owners lose their
homes to exploding property taxes.

IT’S TIME FOR A CHANGE So, whether it’s dumbing down performance standards or feeding the education
cartel, it’s all in a day’s work for Suzi Oppenheimer.
Her constituents really do deserve a lot better.
