Ph otosh op offers a large selection of tools an d featu res for retou ch in g ph otograph s an d images. In this
tu torial, you ’ll learn h ow to u se th e common tou ch -u p tools.
Careful! Although the Spot Healing brush can be a great tool for quick fixes, it’s not always guaranteed
to work if the area surrounding the imperfection is busy. Generally speaking, the surrounding area
should be an approximate match in color & texture to what you want to take place of the unwanted
element in your image.
Healing Brush Tool
Th e Healing Brush Tool performs a similar fu n ction to th e spot h ealing bru sh tool men tioned above.
In stead of au tomatically tryin g to determin e th e ligh tin g, sh ading, and texture from the surroun din g area,
th e h ealin g bru sh tool lets you man u ally select a sou rce, an d then pain t over an imperfection. To select a
sou rce, hold alt and click the desired part of the image. Th en paint over th e area you w ish to replace. As
w ith th e Spot Healin g Bru sh Tool, settin gs su ch as bru sh size can be con trolled in th e options bar.
Patch Tool
W ith th e Patch Tool, an en tire area can be repaired w ith pixels from an oth er area. Ju st like the healing
bru sh tool, th e patch tool w ill try to correct ligh tin g, sh adin g, an d texture. To use the patch tool, first draw
a selection w ith an y of th e selection tools (or th e patch tool, w h ich w ill fu n ction as a lasso tool). Th en ,
u sin g th e patch tool, drag that selection over th e destin ation you w an t to u se to repair that area.

Keep in mind that you are not healing/repairing an image when you use the Clone Stamp Tool. Therefore, lighting and shading will not
be maintained when you paint over an area. What you see is literally what you get when you paint from a given source, making it very useful
in certain situations.
Both tools h ave similar attribu tes su ch as Strength (in crease or decrease th e strength of th e tool, or h ow
mu ch it w ill blu r) an d th e brush, all of w h ich can be adju sted in the Options Bar for each tool. To u se th e
blu r or sh arpen tool, simply set u p th e bru sh to you r specification, h old dow n th e mou se button , an d
h over over th e areas you ’d like to alter in you r image.
You sh ou ld h ave a pretty good feel of th e basic retou ch in g tools by n ow . Th e n ext step in masterin g
Ph otosh op is u su ally learn in g h ow to u se th e pain tin g tools to compliment you r ph oto remastering
abilities!
