THEORETICAL BASE FOR PRACTICE 1

Theoretical Base for Practice

According to the National League for Nursing (NLN, 2017), nurse educator competency

VI is to “pursue continuous quality improvements in the nurse educator role” (p. 1). This

competency closely aligns with Ferris State University’s, Master of Nursing program outcome of

theoretical base for practice which is to “exhibit advanced theoretical and scientific knowledge

as a basis for specialty practice” (Ferris State University, 2013, p. 1). Quality improvement is

done using theory and evidence-based practice to help guide the project or initiatives. Without

these foundational principles, quality improvement would not exist. It is important for the nurse

educator to integrate evidence-based practice and nursing theory into educational presentations

to help the bedside nurse understand the importance of these concepts and see how they relate to

bedside nursing.

The first artifact, “Impact of Quality and Safety in Nursing and the Educator's Role,”

discusses the educator’s role in quality and safety in nursing. The educator plays a key role in

ensuring nursing students understand global, healthcare quality improvement initiatives. The

educator integrates these concepts into educational presentations using current, evidence-based

research and theory.

The second artifact, “LGBTQ and Healthcare,” was selected as part of a quality

improvement project presentation. This project was presented to the Grand Rapids Pride Center

and several groups of nursing students. These ideas were based on recommendations from

national health agencies and nursing research. They utilized evidence-based research to help

guide practice changes between this population and the healthcare system. This presentation is

still used today to educate healthcare staff in my organization on the importance of providing

specialized care to this population.

The third artifact is a demonstration on how to respond to call for abstracts. One key role

the nurse educator has is to share relevant evidence with other educators and healthcare

providers. Once a new idea or concept is developed the nurse educator should work towards

sharing the information to help improve the entire health care system.
