Introduction

The aim of engineering is to dominate and channel the laws that govern natural
phenomena so that man can use them to satisfy their needs with less effort and
more profit. Engineering is a science or technique that stimulates the invention,
construction and operation of machines, as well as executing works. In Guatemala,
Engineering has meant a great advance. Below is a brief historical review of
Engineering in Guatemala.
Objectives

General
 Innovation Engineering aims to train versatile engineers with skills to initiate
and stimulate innovation and to develop new products or innovative services
from its design to its realization and industrialization.

Specific
 With the use of technology seeks to promote positive attitudes towards
change and its implications.

 Create spaces to identify, assess, systematize, standardize, apply and

disseminate novel experiences that contribute to the solution of educational
problems.

 Share and transfer innovative educational experiences to expand and

generalize the experience.
Engineering innovations in Guatemala

History:

Engineering is the science or technique that teaches us to invent, build and

manage all kinds of machines, and to trace and execute certain kinds of works.
The engineers project, perfect and teach to use industrial machines, in addition,
they can plan and build buildings, roads, ports and canals.

On September 1, 1873, the Polytechnic School opened its doors to train Infantry
Officers and, at the same time, to establish the careers of Topographical Engineers
and Telegraph Engineers, thereby giving new impetus to the study of Exact
Sciences and began the teaching of Descriptive Geometry, Analytical Geometry,
Superior Algebra, Resistance of Materials, outside the purely military sciences.

The Faculty of Engineering begins its academic activities in 1879 with the
establishment of the School of Engineering. Subsequently on November 23, 1882,
by decree is elevated to the category of Faculty. From 1879 to 1883, 45 students
had obtained the title of Survey Engineer. Most graduates were engaged in railroad
work and in line with the dividing line on the Mexican border. However, Geographer
Herman Au was distinguished for his Map of Guatemala, Teodoro Pashke for his
work in Planimetría and Juan Arzú Batres for his work in journalism.

In 1930 the "modern era" of the Faculty begins, since the development needs of
Guatemala favor the formation of knowledge in physics, thermodynamics,
chemistry, mechanics and electricity. This allows engineering professionals to face
the impulse of modern construction and an incipient industry in the country. The
development in different disciplines of engineering causes a progressive increase
of its student population, so it was necessary to transfer it to the Campus of the
University of San Carlos de Guatemala in 1959.

The primary mission of the Faculty of Engineering is to train professionals of high

scientific and technical quality, knowledgeable and identified with the national
reality, capable of solving the problems that impede the development of the
majority of the population of the country.
Action field of Engineering in Guatemala:

The Civil Engineer is actively involved in planning and in the study and preparation
of projects; organizes, controls and directs the necessary works in the construction,
operation and conservation of engineering works, such as roads, railroads,
bridges, structures for buildings, and above all housing projects for the great
majority of the population. The field of the Mechanical Engineer includes the
science and art of the generation, transmission and use of heat and mechanical
energy; as well as the design and production of tools, machines and their products;
also projects various types of engines, machines, vehicles and other products for
the mechanical industry.

For its part, the Chemical Engineer deals with the planning, design, assembly and
operation, maintenance and administration of processes and industrial plants, for
production on a commercial scale; performs its work in the industry in general and
especially in the distillation, refining, fuel production, lubricants, edible oils, textiles,
fertilizers, paints, detergents and others plants. The Industrial Mechanical
Engineer, has as objective to satisfy the demand of the medium and small industry
of the country, optimizing the machinery required in the different processes, they
must also generate projects and processes for the development of the industry, as
well as the operation of their facilities and equipment, maintenance and
administration.

The Industrial Engineer develops his activity in the design, improvement and
installation of systems integrated by men, materials, equipment and money, using
the specialized knowledge of the mathematical, physical and social sciences. Its
main function is to organize, manage and supervise industrial plants; Planification
and control of the production; research and product development; quality control,
analysis of work methods, and others. The Mechanical Electrical Engineer plans
and designs the efficient use of the machinery of the industry, performs the
assembly of the industrial equipment and its maintenance.

The Electrical Engineer works mainly in the management of electrical energy in the
area of power, which includes from the generation to the use of electric power; It
also plans, projects, designs, constructs and operates, maintains and administers
electrical systems.
The Electronics Engineer performs both in the commercial and industrial areas and
especially in the automated control systems in industrial processes; as in the
development of the country's telecommunications including telephony, radio and
television systems and services. The Engineer in Sciences and Systems covers
the own technology of the area of computation, having academic formation in
computer science and systems oriented to the solution of problems and situations,
applying the modern technology with focus in systems.

Innovations
Duolingo:

The Guatemalan Luis Von Ahn, creator of the Duolingo application to learn
languages, launched this year a platform to certify the learning of the English
language and thus replace the TOEFL. This is the Duolingo Test Center: a place
where people can submit to a virtual examination of their language skills for only 20
dollars.

The railway of Guatemala:

The British engineer Federico Nanne and the Salvadoran military Luis Schlesinger,
were the contractors appointed in 1877 for what corresponded to the construction
of the new branch, which would go from Escuintla to the capital and would pass
through Amatitlán. The first station was inaugurated on June 20, 1880 by the then
president of the Republic, General Justo Rufino Barrios. Although it was until
September 15, 1884 when the plan began to work.

The Pad CT10 tablet:

Assembled in China, it is the first that engineers develop. Guatemalan and its
marketing price is around 330 dollars. The tablet "was designed with unique and
differentiating specifications, with the best systems and applications.

Horus Energy:

Guatemala has the largest solar power plant in Central America. This plant
generates 58 Megawatts (MW), enough to generate electricity for 60 thousand
homes. It is totally friendly with nature and does not produce emissions of any kind,
since the panels are powered by the sun. Group Onyx invested more than 100
million dollars for the installation of 187 thousand 360 solar modules, which have a
system that follows the solar rays, which makes the energy is used in its entirety. It
will have a useful life of 25 years

SmartAg:

SmartAg, a controlled irrigation system that analyzes the soil and can moisten it
depending on the needs of the land. This is a precision agriculture system. It uses
technology that allows to measure the humidity, temperature, acidity or alkalinity of
the soil, with which the application of water is more efficient.

The system uses the electrical conductivity of the soil by means of two aluminum
electrodes buried at a certain depth of the ground, to which an electrical signal is
sent, which is measured according to the response it emits. The reading will
activate the sprinklers to water the earth.
Conclusions

 Engineering and innovation are fundamental for the development of new

technologies that can be applied in our daily life to facilitate it.

 The implementation of engineering can give a radical change in the

products and processes of innovation caused by advanced manufacturing
technologies.

 innovation and engineering pursue a radical change within our

organizational structure and guarantees us the path to competitiveness,
development and, of course, the achievement of objectives
