Good morning everyone. Thank you for coming today.

I would
like to start by introducing myself. My name is Cerbu Valeria; I
study at the Light Industry. What I want to do is to show what does
the world of fashion invent in the last decade, and I think there will
be plenty of time for questions at the end.
As the Theodore Levitt said, “Creativity is thinking up new
things. Innovation is doing new things” So let me introduce you to
some of them.
The key words of my presentation are the following:
1) Yarn – a long, thin piece of cotton, wool etc;
2) Thread- a piece of fibrous material, a fiber;
3) Natural fibers- are fibers derived from plants or animals;
4) Man-made fibers- are fibers creating by man to improve on
naturally ones;
5) Innovation- is a new idea, device or process.
Natural fibers have been used for apparel and home fashion, for
thousands of years. There are four the most known natural fibers and their
producers.
1) Linen- major producer: ex-Soviet States
2) Cotton- major producer: The United States of America
3) Wool- major producer: Australia
4) Silk- major producer: Japan
Next are Man-made fibers which are the result of research by
scientists to improve on natural fibers. The most known of them are:
1) Acetate 2)Rayon 3)Nylon 4)Velcro
5) Acrylic 6)Polyester 7)Spandex

Compared to other industries, fashion is still very low-tech and is

mostly relied on the inventions of the past centuries. In spite of this, I would
like to tell about some of the innovations in the textile industry, and about
the last one, I will discuss a little bit more-Fabrican, about which my
colleague mentioned above.
1) Schoeller Textiles presents new fabric with the botanical Tencel
fiber that is said to offer soft feel and unique comfort. Tencel is a natural
fibre made with wood pulp.
2) The Woolmark Company presents the latest fabric innovation
made from 100% Australian Merino Wool. It is designed to deliver a unique
machine-washable fabric, which is resistant to wind and rain. This wool is
also a fiber for indoor activity, so it’s a fiber of choice for athletes.
3) With, Fiber Optics engineers and designers have come up with
creative ideas by integrating it into a woven fabric. Usage of this facility
revealed the possibility of telemedicine. Army, Police and Fire departments
will be also able of monitoring their staff during a health care situation.
4) The Argar Technology developed a new range of protective
fabrics featuring intrinsic flame retardant, antistatic and arc flash.
5) Intelligent Textiles presented a military uniform made of
conductive yarn. This means that even if the fabric is cut in several places –
it will continue to work. The idea is that any soldier will have the possibility
to charge all electronics he carries without any extra cables.

6) Manel Tores presented the first spray-on clothing, which is applied

directly on the body and drying as soon as it hits the skin and can be washed
and worn again just like regular clothes. Even if it’s a little strange invention,
it has some advantages: Fabrican can be used to create waterproof and soft
coverings for mattresses. It is ideal for hospitals /hospices/hotels that has a lot
of beds as it is quick and long lasting. Fabrican can also be used in medicine
to layer bandages on the skin without disturbing the wound.

In conclusion, I want to say that a textile has always been one

of the indispensables of our lives. The concept of design was always
there. Then technology was involved and came the mass production,
wherewith was opened the door to high-industrial world.
