I. Introduction
In the field of Civil Engineering, theories and concepts merely consist a small percentage
to contribute in the learning process to become a successful and effective Civil engineer. These
theories and concepts must be seen and applied in the real situation, or simply at the field.
Internship training is a good starting point to develop skills and acquire knowledge that
will further enhance the capability of the students in and out of the field.
Civil Engineering has many specialized fields and faces of work to choose from. I chose
to undergo training in the field of Land Development. Convergence Realty and Land Development
Corporation provides both theoretical and actual training that will give me the gist to acquire
managerial and planning skills particularly in the field of Construction and Project Management.

II. Company Background

Figure 1: Company Logo

Convergence Realty and Development Corporation is one of the land developers based at
Makati City. Their site and current projects includes Bel-Air Residences at Brgy. Marawoy, Lipa
City.
The motif of Bel-Air are zen inspired homes which includes house models such as
Samantha, Selene, Alexandra, Andrea, Diana and Athena.
The main focus of the company is in line with real estate and property development.
This means that they buy land, fiancé real estate deals, build/have builders or contractors
to build projects, create, imagine, control and orchestrate the development from start to finish.
III. Training Details
As an intern, I am tasked to perform all sorts of activities covering structural, material and
cost estimate, project scheduling, material testing, site inspection, material inventory and mock-
up experiments.
Under the structural part of my internship, I was able to apply my knowledge in structural
analysis and design to further improve the method of construction and lessen the cost of materials.
Under the supervision of Eng. Robin Cuevas, a structural consultant and inspector, I learned to use
and incorporate structural theories in integrating these for usage in structural software. I learned to
use correctly and efficiently STAAD Pro V8i SS6, Midas Design Plus, ETABS, STAAD RCDC
v6, SAFE 2016 and STAAD Advanced Foundation. I was also able to utilize these concepts in
structural inspection.
A. Bridge Software – CSI Bridge

Figure 2: CSIBridge Interface and Logo

Aside from building analysis, I was able to grasp the basics of bridge analysis during our
free time. The structural engineer allowed me to have talks and hands-on tutorials particularly in
using CSI bridge.
Modeling, analysis, and design of bridge structures have been integrated into CSiBridge to
create the ultimate in computerized tools tailored to meet the needs of the engineering professional.
The ease with which all of these tasks can be accomplished makes CSiBridge the most versatile
and productive software program in the industry.
Using CSiBridge, engineers can easily define complex bridge geometries, boundary
conditions and load cases. The bridge models are defined parametrically, using terms that are
familiar to bridge engineers, such as layout lines, spans, bearings, abutments, bents, hinges, and
post-tensioning. The software creates spine, shell, or solid object models that update automatically
as the bridge definition parameters are changed.

Figure 3: Modelling and Analysis using CSIBridge

CSiBridge design allows for quick and easy design and retrofitting of steel and concrete
bridges. The parametric modeler allows the user to build simple or complex bridge models and to
make changes efficiently while maintaining total control over the design process. Lanes and
vehicles can be defined quickly and include width effects. Simple and practical Gantt charts are
available to simulate modeling of construction sequences and scheduling.

The CSiBridge includes an easy to follow Wizard that outlines the steps necessary
to create a bridge model.
B. Concrete Design using ETABS

Figure 4: ETABS Logo

ETABS is a sophisticated, yet easy to use, special purpose analysis and design program
developed specifically for building systems. ETABS 2016 features an intuitive and powerful
graphical interface coupled with unmatched modeling, analytical, design, and detailing
procedures, all integrated using a common database. Although quick and easy for simple
structures,

Figure 5: Modelling and Analysis using ETABS

ETABS can also handle the largest and most complex building models, including a wide
range of nonlinear behaviors necessary for performance based design, making it the tool of choice
for structural engineers in the building industry.
C. Foundation Design using SAFE

Figue 5: SAFE Logo

SAFE is a sophisticated, yet easy to use, special purpose analysis, design, and detailing
program developed specifically for concrete slab and base mat systems. SAFE couples powerful
object-based modeling tools with an intuitive graphical interface, allowing the quick and efficient
modeling of slabs of regular or arbitrary geometry with openings, drop panels, post-tensioning,
ribs, edge beams, and slip joints, supported by columns, walls, or soil.

Figure 6: Analysis and Output using SAFE

Design is seamlessly integrated with the modeling
and analysis, and provides comprehensive reporting of the required reinforcement calculated based
on a chosen design code.

Detailed drawings may be produced effortlessly for slabs and beams designed using
SAFE. SAFE may be used as a stand-alone application, or may be used in conjunction with ETABS
to complete analysis, design, and detailing of concrete floor plates created in ETABS.

D. General Design using SAP2000

Figure 7: SAP2000 Logo

SAP2000 represents the most sophisticated and user-friendly release of the SAP series of
computer programs. When initially released in 1996, SAP2000 was the first version of SAP to be
completely integrated within Microsoft Windows.

Figure 8: Analysis and Design using SAP2000

It features a powerful graphical user interface that is unmatched in terms of ease-of-use
and productivity. Creation and modification of the model,
execution of the analysis, and checking and optimization of the design, and production of the
output are all accomplished using this single interface. A single structural model can be used for a
wide variety of different types of analysis and design.

E. Analysis and Concrete Design using STAAD Pro V8i, STAAD Advanced Foundation and
STAAD RCDC

Figure 9: STAAD Pro, Advanced Foundation & RCDC Logo

Analysis and concrete design is made easy using this Bentley software. Detailed plans, bill
of quantities, detailed calculations and safety/fail check was made available. I was able to operate
and perform correctly the necessary commands in structural analysis and design.

F. MIDAS Design Plus for Conventional and Easy Member Design

Figure 10: MIDAS Design Logo

Under the Site Inspection and Monitoring, observations and note taking is the key to absorb
most of the learnings. It is divided into Manpower Monitoring and Structural Inspection. During
manpower monitoring, I am tasked to document the available and deployed manpower, which
includes laborers and skilled workers, on the site to further use these data to provide and project a
real time Project Schedule for the required scope of works.
During structural inspection, I was able to use my learnings to check and verify the actual
accomplishment versus the as built plan. These includes rebar arrangement and cutting lists,
scaffold staging, concrete pouring and curing, formworks and installation, framing and foundation
works.
Under Material and Cost Estimate, I am tasked to do and provide detailed calculation and
estimates for the overall material required to finish a project. These includes construction materials
and finishing materials such as paint and accessories. Upon completion, I was able to suggest that
the material quantity should be increased in painting works to properly deliver the optimum and
desired output and eliminate the present bottleneck condition in this scope of works thereby
eliminating the delay caused by these condition.
Under Material/Warehouse Inventory, I am tasked to do a monthly inventory of the
materials available in the warehouse. During these activity, I got the opportunity to know and
observe the construction materials and accessories from cement to elbow pipes to switches to
roofing and so forth.
Familiarization to these materials is an opportunity as if I had a fieldtrip in a Hardware
Store. These contributed to my stock of pile to be used in material estimate. I was also able to
observe and know the process of release and delivery of materials in and out of the warehouse. I
was also tasked to further improve the layout of the materials in the warehouse to facilitate better
flow of transactions and eliminate bottlenecking caused by the delay of material release.
Under Project Scheduling, the data I got from manpower monitoring is to be utilized. I
made Gantt Charts, PERT-CPM and perform a Weekly Housing Report of every house unit under
construction to provide update on the real time condition of the project and to tackle the issues and
concerns encountered during the said project. These will help eliminate the repeating problem and
provide solution to avoid having that problem.
Under General Testing, I performed the necessarily tests such as Continuity Test, Pressure
Test, Water line and Sanitary Tapping, Electrical testing and CHB compressive testing.
Under Land and Property Works, I was able to know the proper setbacks required under
the present HLURB code, hence, to properly set the layout of the house and the property
boundaries.
Under Punch List Work, I performed checking of defects particularly in the house finishes
such as tiles, paints, doors, windows and handrails. To perform such checking on Window
openings, I was able to know and use instruments such as Laser Level, Level bars and plumb bobs.
In my 500 hours of Internship training, I was able to gain as much knowledge and
experience that they have to offer. They didn’t treat me as an intern, instead as a real employee.
And that gave me the experience on what it is and how it is in the working area/field.
