Anticipatory Set-
Who can remind me what a symbol is again? What are the Texas symbols we’ve learned about so far?
Yes! Symbols are all around us even in the classroom. Who remembers what Texas symbol we have in our
room?

Input/Modeling-
Today we are going to be learning about Bluebonnets. They are a type of flower, just like any other flower
they still need water, sunlight, and air to survive. What makes them special is that they are native to Texas
and are the Texas state flower. Has anyone ever seen a bluebonnet before?
Have students pull out their journals to write down Bluebonnet Facts whole group.
 Bluebonnets are the state flower
 Bluebonnets bloom in the Spring
 Buebonnets are native to Texas

Guided Practice-
Where do you think they got their names from?
Today we are going to read a story about bluebonnets and how they came to be a Texas symbol. We are
going to read The Legend of the Bluebonnet. Hmmm….
Let’s take a look at the pictures before we start reading. Do you think this story is from now, the present?
Or does it look like it is from long ago?
-Exactly! Legends and tales are well known stories that have been passed on through many life times. So
this is a tale from a long time ago that will share information about the land of Texas before it was the
Texas we know it to be today.
 (During): What do you think a sacrifice is and why were they asked to give one? What will it do?
What is she sacrificing and why?
 After: How did she get her name? How do you think you’d feel if you were she-who-is-alone? Have
you ever acted selfishly or have you ever made a sacrifice?
The day after her sacrifice the Gods covered the hills of Texas with Bluebonnets, the same color as the
blue jay feathers from her warrior doll.

Independent Practice-
We are going to add a page to our Texas book for Bluebonnets.
‘Texas has Bluebonnets. The Legend of the Bluebonnet symbolizes a sacrifice made for the greater
good.’
After students write the sentences on their sheet they will draw and color a bluebonnet underneath.

Closure-
Reflect on what we read and added to our Texas books as a class
Reflections and Documentation/Evidence of Lesson Effectiveness
Be sure that this is specific.
What happened during the lesson? (Brief summary --- help the reader know how you were able to follow
your lesson plan.)

What parts of the lesson led to engagement and student learning?

In thinking about your first two responses --- So What does it mean about your planning? So What does it
mean about student learning? So What does it mean about your learning to teach?
Now What did you learn from teaching this lesson that can apply to other lessons? How will you apply what
you learned from teaching this lesson to your teaching of future lessons?
