INTRODUCTION
Did you ever notice that the Head Centre is not all inside the body? You know the Personality
Crystal that we are endowed with sometimes is within our body and sometimes isn't. They have
a lot of people that have 'death-bed' experiences where they look down on themselves, and this
is part of that process. The Head Centre has a crack in it. It's one of my jokes about loving
cracks - it has a crack in it. That's how the Personality Crystal gets in.
So it's one of those odd things about the nature of our design, is that we have one of our
centres that is literally outside of our body. Now when I say it's outside of our body, it's outside
of the flesh. It's not outside of the aura - it's within the nature of the aura.
So the first thing to notice here about the Head Centre, the Head Centre with its keynote of
Inspiration. Think about the nature of how things work for us. As a mechanism we are absolutely
in the 'now' - just as a mechanism, however we perceive it. And as a mechanism in the now,
regardless of our capacity to perceive the now, our entire form is experiencing the now. And it's
experiencing the now at many, many, many different levels - it's taking everything in. Not just
the obvious, what we see and smell and hear, what we touch, the taste of the air we breathe, all
of these things - we're taking in all of this information. See the way the brain is structured, the
physical plant of the brain, is that its capacity for storage is infinite. I mean, that's one of the
miracles of this machine, is that this machine can keep on storing. It doesn't mean you have
access; it just means it keeps on storing because it stores everything in space - literally. So it's
endless, it's infinite. Information is stored well, nowhere in that sense, physically - it's just stored.
So you take all this stuff in every moment of every day - every second - you're taking it all in.
This is in-spiration - you are in-spiring. You are taking in the whole cosmos each second, and
you're storing it infinitely in the space within your brain. This is inspiration. It's not something
that's coming in from up there or down here, or whatever. It is a by-product of your existence - to
take all of that in, to inspire it.
And look, the way this box is structured up here is that there's a little bit of this box in the front
that goes, "Hi, it's me." And the rest of it is all buried in the back doing all the crunching. And you
never, never get to meet anybody who works in that department. You know, they are all in the
big grey corridors of crunching. So all of this stuff that you're taking in, every second, every
moment that you're breathing in, it's literally the prana of consciousness - you're breathing it in.
You store it all in these deep grey areas. And it builds up a pressure because you're taking all of
this stuff in, but you're not designed just to take it in. You're designed to take it in and do
something with it. That is, you're designed to either vibrate, or shake, or rattle or roll with it
because we're here to process the consciousness field.
So you've got all this stuff that's in here, and it's in the grey areas of the brain - about 90% of the
mass of the brain - and we have no conscious access to that. You know, we have this neo-
cortex. The neo-cortex is not really such a big deal physically - it's just very important to us. It is
the place of our reflective consciousness. It is where we can identify ourselves in the Maya. It's
where we can actively process what we imagine happens to us. Now between the deep grey
areas and the neo-cortex there's a bridge. And this bridge is a border; it's a threshold. And
there's a guard at the threshold. And the guard at the threshold we call the pineal gland. This is
the association of the pineal gland to the Head Centre.
See, the pineal gland does some very interesting things in our lives. First of all, it's like a
sponge. That is, if you have a sponge and it has no liquid in it, it's open. But if you fill it with
liquid it will literally close up. If you tighten that sponge nothing can get through - it's not porous
The G Centre is the nature of our identity. The G Centre is connected to the Magnetic Monopole. It's this
Magnetic Monopole that holds us together in the illusion of our separateness and guides us along the line
of our geometry in life. It is both movement and it is love, for in its capacity to hold us together it's trying
to hold everything together. In pulling everything together, it is the essence of what love is: to bring us
together as one.
When you think about the biological affiliations, the G Centre is connected to what we call the liver. It's
one of those things to be clear about alcohol. Alcohol is destructive to the identity because it is so
destructive to the liver. Anything that so adversely affects the liver is adversely affecting the identity.
The G Centre - a lot of people feel uncomfortable with the fact that if they have an undefined G Centre
that there may be some stigma attached to that because they don't have a 'Self'. Please remember the
nature of what it is to live in the world. No centre remains undefined - ever. It's always getting hooked up.
The difference in the chart between what is defined and what is undefined is always quite simple: what is
defined is fixed and what is undefined is inconsistent. I was having a conversation about awareness last
night. If you have somebody who has an undefined Splenic system, an undefined Ajna, they have no fixed
awareness, but because those centres are open they are here to be aware of awareness. Somebody with an
undefined Self is here to be aware of Self, to be able to identify Self, because it gets to experience Self in
all of its possibilities, because it is open and it takes it in. It is not a handicap and a centre does not make
the totality. Who we are is the totality and the synthesis of all of these centres at work. Who we are
includes people who have undefined Selves. All that means in their life is that direction for them and love
for them is inconsistent - that's what it means. The defined Self has very little recognition of the nature of
Self at all. What you are, you live. It is the undefined Self that has this capacity to recognise the nature of
Self. What is the right direction? What is the healthiest identity?
There is this mantra that I give to the undefined Self which is, if you're in the wrong place, you're with the
wrong people. One of the ways for the undefined Self to recognise the nature of its life is to see clearly
that everything for it must be initiated by others - must be, must be. Because something is initiated by
others does not mean that you owe them or that you are bound to them. It simply means that they are
initiating a direction of love. The story I tell about going to a restaurant with somebody - if you don't like
the restaurant, you're with the wrong people because they will take you to the wrong restaurant and the
wrong this and the wrong that. If you do like the people, it doesn't mean that you have to owe them
anything. You don't owe them because they take you to a good place to eat. You don't have to bond with
them and hold onto them for dear life because you hope that they will take you to other places that are
good. You can always go back to that place yourself the second time - always, yourself, the second time.
It is in understanding mechanics that you liberate people from their burdens. The burden of the undefined
Self is the burden that I do not know where I am going and I do not know if I can hold onto love. Yet,
everybody in the world is here to offer them all those things - everybody. Everybody is here to offer the
undefined Self a direction, a form of love, and because of that they have a real gift. They've got all the
flavours. They're a unifying force. All undefined centres, when wisdom emerges out of them, they
become unifying forces. They help the other to understand. I do not understand the nature of my Self. I
can be theoretical about it through Human Design, but in terms of my experience, Self in me is something
that just happens. Yet, somebody with an undefined Self who takes in my Self into their aura, they know
much more about it than I do - they're the ones taking it in. They're the ones taking it in so they can
compare it. We live in the Maya, the measurement of things. They're the ones that can compare and
measure the nature of my Self.
Page 1
People who are defined emotionally know very little about emotions. They only experience their
emotions and its type. Somebody who has a defined Sacral Centre knows very little about the nature of
sexuality. They are the sexuality - it is different and fixed to their type. Always remember the nature of
what a channel is: it's an incredibly narrow line. It's so narrow that it's almost spooky. It's not just a matter
of going from gate to gate and from line to line. There are deeper levels underneath all of those lines.
When you get right down to where the real line is, it's a thin, narrow little line, one of thousands of
variations of a possibility. Definition is very fixed and narrow. I was tormented in my life by my
undefined centres. They are now the real joy in my life. They are rich with information, knowledge. I can
see their beauty whereas before, I could not. I could be objective in terms of its nature. Out of that comes
wisdom. This is the pathway for all of us. These undefined centres are where we go to school. The
undefined Self is not a handicap. It is just a matter of coming to grips with the nature of what the
mechanics is - nothing more, nothing less.
The G Centre is magical. It is magical because it is the way in which the entire wheel gets pulled into a
core. The eight gates of the G Centre are the leading gates of the eight houses of the I Ching. These lead
gates provide the basic foundation, the lower trigram that the following seven gates are going to share in
common. These eight gates of the G Centre also touch all 12 zodiacal signs. In doing so, not here in the
Sphinx but in the Vessel of Love, all of the gates are cusp hexagrams that cross zodiacal lines. Within the
G Centre you have all 12 signs of the zodiac, you have all eight houses of the I Ching. You have the
whole totality of the outside brought into its core. Whatever G means - and I have no idea - Gravity is
OK, it holds us together and God's OK, and all these other Gs we can come up with. Nonetheless, that G
Centre is bringing everything in.
Think about what the Magnetic Monopole is doing and think about something so extraordinary about the
G Centre - love does not live here on Earth and direction does not live here on Earth. These are things that
are passing through. They come from outside and they move through us. We participate in the energy of
love. We are the filters of that. It isn't like it lives here. It's moving through. In the G Centre, these gates
are equal in distance to each other and there are eight of them. What happens is that we have two aspects
of the G Centre. They are made up of two crosses: the Cross of the Sphinx and, as we will see, the Cross
of the Vessel of Love.
The Cross of the Sphinx is about direction. Literally what that means is that if you take all the G Centres
on Earth and you add them all up with all of their Monopoles, what we're doing is we're holding ourselves
in line to love and we are following the direction of love. That direction of love is to return to the whole.
If you are looking for the place within every single human being that is there to touch God as a totality, it
is there within the G Centre and it does not matter whether that's defined or not - that's not the point.
Everyone has a Monopole - we are all part of the direction of love. When we're looking here at the
Sphinx, we're talking about the physical direction of the totality as it moves through space. This is the
direction of mutation.
You can see in the illustration in the centre of the bodygraph this image of Shiva's staff, this Neptunian
symbol, the pitchfork of these gates that go up and the [Gate] 2 coming down. In this Cross of the Sphinx,
the first thing to recognise about this is that the Cross of the Sphinx is something that people are born
with. There are all kinds of Sphinx people, whether that's Marx or Freud, all kinds of Sphinx people,
because these are oppositions in the wheel and they are ninety-degree oppositions, which means that some
of the Sun/Earth aspects are always going to be in these gates and you're going to have people being born
four times a year every year who are Sphinxes and they maintain our direction in the world - that's their
job. Without them we'd be lost. Every 165 years we get a very special generation. This time it was in [late
1967 until mid1970] when the planet Neptune was in the 14th gate. The planet Neptune rules, planetarily-
Page 2
wise, the Sphinx. Neptune rules our direction. Four times during the year and a half, or nearly two and a
half, that Neptune was in the 14th gate, we had all kinds of very important Sphinxes come into the world
who are empowered by Neptune out of the Sacral to generate mutative direction. We have a very special
generation of beings who are alive today. They come once every 165 years. They are keepers of the
world. This Cross of the Sphinx is made up of these four aspects.
The 2nd gate, The Receptive, this is Taurus, this is the Bull; Leo, the 7th gate, The Army, the Lion; The
Fellowship of Man, the 13th gate in Aquarius, the Human; and in Scorpio, the 1st hexagram, in the
ancient Scorpionic symbol, the Eagle. Here you have the four aspects of the Sphinx. Everything about the
Sphinx is rooted in the 2nd hexagram, according to many, many mystics, old ones, long ago. There's a
story that I assume is correct. The Sun is always in Taurus because we are always in Taurus because we
are in Taurus, the constellation. I assume that that's probably true, but there's no way of knowing that
because all of that is just relative because we give a name to a configuration. However, in the spiritual
sense, it is definitely true, that this is the Earth itself and it is the depth of the form itself. After all, this is
the first earth principle in Taurus.
You come to the 2nd gate which is the yinest of all hexagrams, The Receptive. This is pure form. In this
pure form, out of this pure form, all direction is derived. Without form there is no direction. It is rooted in
the form and it is rooted in the 2nd gate and the 2nd gate is where the driver sits. This is the aspect, the
Monopole, that knows precisely what your direction is and the only thing that happens when you move
through from the 2nd gate, which is the handle, in that sense, when you move through and when you
move through the forks, all the forks are doing is just breaking off that one uniform direction, because
there is only one, but giving you three different perspectives out of that one direction. We call those roles:
what the direction looks like when it is seen logically, what the direction looks like when it's observed
abstractly, what the direction looks like when it's moved individually, but it's all the same direction. It is
just nuances. The absoluteness of the pulse of life is in the 2 - the Channel of the Beat. This is the pulse of
the direction in space, always waiting in that pulse for the potential for mutation. So the direction is
uniform, and this is why it is called here in this chart The Director. When we were doing global cycles
and we were looking at the mystical name of this gate, we saw that it was the Gate of the Plan. This is the
direction. This is the plan. The plan is in form, absolute Yin-Yin form. It's about being in a body moving
in space.
When you go across in the opposition from the 2nd hexagram, you get to The Creative and you get to its
purest polarity. This is the extreme Yin-Yang of the I Ching. You have the six Yin lines of The Receptive
and the six Yang lines of The Creative. The great creative direction is rooted in difference - always. What
is creative about the 1st gate is its need to be able to show the direction. Not to tell you about it, but
literally to be able to live the direction so you can see that example - the need to express one's unique
direction. Now, of course, that's illusionary. The direction of the 1 isn't any different from the 7 or the 13.
It's just nuances, because the direction is uniform for all of us. Because we are living in a relative
Universe and because we are dualistic, we do not share the same perspective on direction. Yet, we are all
in the same direction. What The Creative seeks is its opportunity to make its contribution - it's the 8th
gate at the other end - to make its contribution by being different, and by being different, of course, means
just by being itself, following its natural direction.
This 1st hexagram is smack in the middle of Scorpio. The nature of creative expression also involves a
great deal of depth and pain because the individual in its expression is not being collective - it is
remaining purely individual. These nuances that will come out through the 7 and will come out through
Page 3
the 13 collectivise the direction. In other words, they allow collective access to the general direction and
give them access in a way that they assume that direction is their own. The abstract is saying, "I know
where we come from," and the logic is saying, "I know where we're going to." That makes the collective
comfortable with direction. The 1 is saying, "I'm going this way." It's just living out its thing, not
interested in where the collective seems to be going, even though they are all going in the same direction.
After all, we study Human Design in separate ways. We can also build up a sense that there is a genuine
barrier between what is collective, what is tribal and what is individual. Now I have to accentuate each of
those in their own way for you in order, as a teacher for you, for you to grasp what they are about. After
all, it's all within each of us. It's not like they do not have their common ground - they always do. Their
common ground is there in the 2 to be seen. The common ground is that we are traveling in the same
direction. It may not appear to be so because our perspectives are different. But the truth remains in the 2
that the direction is universal for all of us. Same track - we're all going down the same line.
When you come to the 2nd polarity in this cross and you come to the 13-7, this is the collective's way and
it's the collective's way of dealing with direction. After all, the thing that human beings are dealing with
the most is that we are in this illusion of separateness and are whizzing through space. Part of us says,
"Well, the best thing for me to do is to remember where I came from, because that gives me scale and
measurement." The other part is saying, "I better pay attention to where we're going," and the other part is
saying, "Hey, where am I now?" This is our process. When you come to the other side, you come to the
collective's way of dealing with all of that. The larger collective is saying, "We better pay attention to the
future because we're moving fast and I don't want to hit anything." That's what you get when you come to
the 7th gate. The 7th gate is responding to this direction and is saying, "I am going to have to assume a
role in order to lead people into the future because we have this direction in space." They have to be
prepared and organised. We're going to have to have a lot of committees to make sure we are in the right
direction, even though the direction is always right. But that's another story.
The 7th gate - the Role of the Self in Interaction - a role gate. Remember that in the Sphinx, three of the
gates are role gates - they're very important. There are only six role gates and three of them come out of
the Sphinx. The 2nd gate is not a role gate at all. It is literally directing all those other gates. It provides
the general direction in space. In order to accommodate the collective and the individuals, this fork comes
out and provides the necessary patterns and structures for them - the role of the leader - Alpha. Alpha -
design of leadership for good or bad. The logical way is to take authority over what's already happening,
which is one of the better jokes in life. You're already moving in space, so you take authority over the
movement in space. It's like Clinton saying that because of him the economy is great. This is just the way
these things work. The 7th gate, that role of a leader, what that role is trying to establish is a way to
convince the collective that the future is going to be safe and that the direction that they're going in is the
correct direction. Any direction that is not correct is going to be challenged. The 18, the 48, all this
business, be suspicious in your 63, check out the formula, formulate your opinions, come up with the
detail, check out all the patterns and say, "Look, we're going in this direction and this is the way it's going
to be." The thing about role gates is that they are archetypes. Role gates are very powerful things.
Depending upon the nature of your design, how those role gates function is going to vary. If you've got
leadership in an undefined Self, if you've got the 7th gate in the undefined Self, it means that to be able to
live out the role of a leader is something that is going to be inconsistent. You can't be something that is
consistent - it is not defined. It's very different from somebody who has a role that's defined and activated.
The 13th gate is what establishes out of the Identity of the power of reflection. It's a role of The Witness
in which others and experience are collected - the stories of others, the experiences of others. One's own
Page 4
experiences can be reflected upon. The 13th gate is looking backward and trying to hold onto the
direction that we've moved in, to see the continuity in the line, looking back, the mirror to the logic - all
about finding continuity in direction. To witness where we've come from tells us a lot - we know that.
This is part of our history education. To know where we're going is a real advantage - it saves us a lot of
difficulties and problems. This collective process of trying to make sense out of direction is a collective
process that is caught up in time. In Einstein's Universe, time and direction are basically the same thing.
Everything having to do with the collective is caught up in time. It is caught up in trying to figure out the
nature of time and movement - "Next year the economy is going to dip" - just trying to figure out the
timing of the patterns. It's collective, after all - it's not personal. It's a way to express to the collective what
the direction is. This is not about love, after all. It is about assuring all of us that we're flying along in the
right direction in space. This is our way to pretend that everything is OK. This whole mechanism that's
hurtling us around at 445,000 km an hour in space is OK and somebody is driving it. Let's hope. It's our
way of saying, "OK, 7,000 years ago, we've been coming along since then and, you know, it's kind of like
OK. Hold your fingers and wait."
The other thing about the collective is that the 13 doesn't necessarily tell you the secrets. It doesn't
necessarily share with you where we've come from, any more than the 7 actually guides you. There's
always this inherent duality that is there. 7s and 13s have that in common in that they don't necessarily
fulfil their roles - they hold back their leadership, they hold back their secrets. When I say hold back, by
the way, that's usually because they don't have any access to get it out. I have an associate of mine that
has a 13th gate. When the telephone rings and I know it's for me and I know it's something, that it's
something that has to do with me, they will answer the phone, they'll have a conversation, they'll put the
phone down, they'll walk right past me, they won't say a word, and if I say to them, "Was that for me?"
they'll suddenly turn around and say, "Oh, yeah, it was. Blah blah blahs" That's 13s - they hold stuff
inside. That's part of what they're like. That's why the 33 is so different - it's the Gate of Remembering.
It's remembrance itself. It's a Gate of Privacy but because it is in the Throat, it has the capacity to release
the secrets.
Everything about the presence of the Sphinx in the world is to assure us of continuity in our movement.
When you can get to the point where you can imagine for yourselves all these Monopoles, and there are a
lot of them, and to imagine that all of them, because all of this is relative and small, they're all basically
one Monopole all working together to hold everything else together. The whole business about direction
is that the moment that you just surrender to the fact that you have all these 2nd gates in the world, and
that the direction is guaranteed, we are always in the right direction - always. We have no control over
that - none whatsoever. The direction is simply there. The moment that somebody has the 2nd gate, the
information of direction moves through that. What to do? It snaps you up onto that line and along that line
you go.
This business of no choice - Einstein. Einstein's Theory of Relativity. This Theory of Relativity basically
postulates is that everything from the beginning has been unidirectional - that's what it's saying.
Everything from the beginning has been unidirectional and eventually the light itself, which has been
travelling unidirectional, that created and illuminated the Universe, would be bent by gravity. Ultimately
we would have this illusion of a contained Universe. Now, everything in the Universe is expanding
uniformly - we already know that. We proved that last year. Hubbell - bless Hubbell - proved for us the
veracity of Einstein's theory: it is true. From the Big Bang we have been moving unidirectionally in space.
Think about what that means. It means that everything is a straight line. Oh, yeah, the line curves in time,
but those timescales are much vaster than anything that is pertinent to our timescales are. In travelling in
this unidirectional Universe in this quick little ellipse of 80 odd years, if you look back, you only have the
straight line - you do not have anything else. Go back in your memory. Take out of your memory the
'could have's and the 'should have's. Just see the line of memory, because that's the straight line of being.
All lives are straight lines moving in spaces - all lives. There is no choice in that. It is too fast for choice.
Page 5
We are not able to defy that law of the Universe. We are flying in a straight line. Everything that we leave
in our wake is a straight line. There is nothing else - nothing. It's just physics. It's not like you have to be a
genius to figure it out. There's nothing that you can do about that. You are just...
This is the whole business about understanding the nature of direction. The nature of direction is fixed -
it's been fixed from the beginning. We, the crystals of consciousness, having been moving through space
for billions and billions and billions of years. We haven't always been here in this solar system. We have
travelled through. That's why we have these fantasies about movement through space. We've been
travelling through space forever - a straight line. No ifs, no ands, no buts, no maybes, no this orthat. It's
just a straight line. We're not designed to live the straight line easily. Our program is to go from chaos to
order - that's our program. Human beings - that's what we're involved in. This is our enterprise: chaos to
order. The fact that direction is rooted in these three roles - it becomes very important to see that these
roles are deeply significant. They are the reassuring roles. They're the roles that say everything's OK, it's
all OK.
While I was traveling, the second year I was coming out here to the States, there was a woman on the
plane beside me who seemed very interested in trying to crank up a conversation with me and I was not in
the mood. She said, at some point, "What do you do?" and I said, "I tell people it's OK." This is the nature
of those roles of the Sphinx - to say, "Hey, it's OK. Yesterday, it's OK. Tomorrow, it's OK. Right now, it's
OK." That's what they're here for. This is the beauty of what the Sphinx is and what its roles are there for,
to be able to calm everybody down. "Yes, we're going fast. Yes, there is a pilot. Everything's going to be
OK. Really, we will get there. It's all right. Hold on." The individuals are there, "Let me show you the
way. It's all right." And the leader is saying, "Look, look, look. I have the pattern. Let me show you.
We're just going that way and we'll make a left and then we'll make a right. Everything's OK."
The thing is that the roles of the Self through the Sphinx are there to reassure. By the way, the people that
have the 7, the 1 and the 13 are assured themselves they're not. Of course, [here] lies the crux of all this,
because they're uncertain. As long as they're uncertain, their ability to calm everybody else down when
the leader is saying, "Things are not OK," everybody's in panic. "We're in the wrong direction!"
Immediately everybody is nervous. We here to reassure each other. That's the main thing in being here
and directing. You see, this is the joke of the Sphinx. The Sphinx has always perplexed people. The real
Sphinx, at least the Human Design Sphinx, that's just there to assure everybody - it's the other side. It's not
the side that makes them wonder and uncomfortable - what does it mean? It's the other side that says,
"Aw, it's OK. I don't know what it means but it's OK. Yesterday we were over there, and tomorrow we're
going to be over there. It's OK. So far, so good." The old Sphinx was "Beware of danger. This is all
about... Everybody calm down. Everybody relax. It's all alright. We'll get there." So when you are looking
at this, don't disassociate it from what love is.
As you will see, the Gates of Love are just as much gates of direction, in a different way - the direction of
what love is, here in the Sphinx what love's direction is. It's to assure everybody that it's all OK, and for
good reason. That 2nd gate that's feeding all of that, that thing mutates. Everybody is saying,
"Everything's OK. What happened to yesterday?" It mutates and the whole game changes. When all those
roles are going, "I don't know what's happening but we'll figure it out. Let me get a committee," it's very
important to see what that's all about there. It really is about our ability to be able to share with each other
comfort in the direction we are going in, to understand the nature of our movement. We are a species. To
understand the story of our species, to understand our movement through space, what this evolution really
looks like, where we're going with this - this is the expansion of our knowledge, and at the same time it's
reassuring. We are reassured to know the night before, that there's a storm coming. It's of value to us to
know that. We can prepare for that, both psychically and physically - it's reassuring as a role. These roles
are there to be reassuring. That's why the 13th gate can suffer so much from people always telling them
their problems. The 13th gate has to listen to everybody's story. Of course, it's there because that 13th gate
Page 6
is at its deepest level is there to be reassuring. "Yes, you have problems. It's OK." We all have problems -
that's our direction in life. It's OK. That's the whole thing - the reassuring quality of that - what the Sphinx
roles are all about, to let us know that it's OK. "The direction we're going in is OK. Everything's all right.
Nobody needs a refund, right? OK."
This Cross of the Vessel of Love is about the four different aspects, or ways, of love of the Self, within
the Self, from the Self. Not to be confused with other forms of love that we find in Human Design, that is,
sexual love, sexual love that exists through the human sexuality, through electro-magnetic connections,
love as attraction that can exist anywhere within the bodygraph through electromagnetism, that is, where
one person has one gate in a channel and another person has another. Let's be clear that what we're talking
about here is the love that has to do with our direction, and it is the higher love that guides our place
within the totality. These four kinds of love: first of all, to understand the nature of the Vessel. The Vessel
is a symbol for these four aspects in the same way that the Sphinx is a symbol of the four aspects. Each of
the gates is a component of the nature of the Sphinx. Here, each of the gates being a component of this
Vessel. For example, you have here at the bottom you have the 15th gate and 15th gate is the outside of
the urn or the Vessel. It is the outer surface - it's what you have contact with. If you go to the 46th gate,
Pushing Upwards, you have the Gate of the Flesh, you have the inside of the Vessel that is the walls, the
internal walls of the Vessel. If you go across to the 25th gate, you have the Gate of Blood and you have
what fills the Vessel up. It is filled up with Blood. The 10th gate, the Gate of the Behaviour of the Self,
the Gate of Nature, this is the lip of the Vessel out of which the life is poured. This is the Vessel of Love.
These are the aspects of the Vessel.
You can see in the bodygraph that you have a very different kind of configuration. The Sphinx cross
connects three centres. Here, of course, you can see that the Vessel involves five different centres and
brings in awareness and the Ego. So it has a very different impact. That is, love has a much more
extensive network within us than direction does. The real difference is being generated by the 10th gate
because it opens up in several different ways, opening up into Integration.
We begin with the aura, the 15th gate. The 15th gate, the Channel of Being in the Flow, the Channel of
Rhythm, the 15th gate is Modesty. Interesting about Modesty - in the original I Ching, Modesty was the
only hexagram where all six lines were positive or superior lines. There were no negative lines in the
original. Of course, this has to do with the nature of loving diversity - this Gate of the Love of Humanity.
The love of humanity is the extremes of its rhythm. One cannot love humanity unless one can accept the
extremes of human rhythm. Of course, humanity is made up of all kinds of extremes. All of those
extremes fit together in the order of things because that's the 15th gate.
You can see that life forms themselves must have this 15th gate in order to generate diversity - plants,
animals, whatever, so you don't have just one type of human, one look, like the same ear of corn, one
cloned species. What we have is this extreme rhythm in life - this creates the diversity. The other thing
about that is that the 15th gate has a particular quality in that it is very magnetic. It's very magnetic in the
sense that through the 15th gate you get much more of this Monopole pull. It basically increases the
Monopole frequency or at least allows it to come out at a stronger frequency. Years ago I worked with
aura sticks, which are very interesting. I only have one motor, so my three open motors makes me very
sensitive to water under the ground and all these kinds of things. I've worked with aura sticks measuring
auras. The thing that was so fascinating to me was that whenever I was measuring a 15 or a 5 I was
always dealing with a much bigger aura - they just are. There is a quality of that in that out of that 15th
gate is established the world's aura. It is this aura that is the first real collective way of finding love. You
Page 7
step into somebody's aura - the aura contact level - in that moment of stepping into somebody's aura is the
recognition that you are part of something else. This is the love of humanity - that we are interconnective.
This is the shell. This is the outside of the Vessel.
GATE 46: PUSHING UPWARD - THE GATE OF THE DETERMINATION OF THE SELF
What is really giving the Vessel its structure is the Flesh. It is the Flesh in the 46th gate, Pushing
Upwards, the Gate of Serendipity, Gate of Good Fortune, to be in the right place at the right time. This is
the deepest form of personal, physical love. It is the love of being in your body. It is the love of being
Flesh. This love of being in the body becomes translated as being in the experience so that it can be
reflected on later. By accepting that one is always in the right place within one's body, one can let go in
experience in order to be able to reflect later on what has been discovered or to discover through the
reflection process - Pushing Upwards into the Kingdom of Heaven. The body is the Temple and the Flesh
is weak, so the nature of commitment is the thing that conditions this aspect of love. If you make the right
commitments, and you're in the right experience, what is correct for you, then you will feel that quality of
love, that quality that says, "I'm really in the right place. This feels really good."
Opposite the 46 is the 25. The 25, of course, is unique in the wheel because it is the Alpha and the
Omega. It is part Pisces and part Aries. It is the worm Ouroborus. It is innocence. The 25 is the gateway
into the spiral because it never really comes back and bites its own tail. By the time it has come back it
has moved in space - it's just a spiral. Depending on your perspective, it looks like it's biting its own tail -
it's not. The whole thing about the nature of innocence is that this represents the Blood.
Inanimate objects do not have a defined channel. They only have one centre - the G Centre. The moment
you have a defined channel, like with a single cell, you have life. Without a defined channel there can be
no life. So it is inanimate. All inanimate objects have a potential of activation of the 25th gate. All
inanimate objects have the Gate of Innocence. If you think about the Universe and you think about all the
inanimate material of the Universe, you are experiencing, witnessing the Blood of the Universe. It is all
part of the life of the totality. It is only when you can see that all inanimate objects, regardless of how we
perceive them, are the Blood of the Universe, then universal love is something easy to grasp. All things
are part of the body of the totality. All things are one within the whole body and there can be no
differentiation between one or another. Universal Love is not simply about Universal Love at the human
level. It is about loving dust, it's about loving the emptiness, it's about love for everything, without there
being any measurable difference between the quality or level of love, whether it is animate or inanimate.
"Don't make me choose between my guitar and you."
I have the 25th gate, I have the 51st gate, I have a deep connection to the inanimate. It's always been clear
to me in my life that I can love a view as much as I love a person. What to do? Universal Love is like that.
It has nothing to do with people and has everything to do with the love of the whole living process. It is
that love that drives it because it's the Blood - it's what we feed off of. It's what we live off of. The Jews
and the Muslims take the blood out of slaughtered food and they take the blood out because they do not
want to take in the spirit of the animal. Here at the 25th gate, this Gate of Blood, this is where the spirit is.
It's true - it flows in our blood. And like the Bible says, the Blood is life and it is true. So every inanimate
object in the Universe is the Blood of the Universe and each speck of dust and every meteor and every
rock is part of that living force.
When I was a teenager I had my first LSD experience. I was sitting on the side of the hill, leaning up
against a big rock. As I got to the peak of my experience, that rock began to vibrate and breathe. It was an
extraordinary thing for me. I could not get over the fact that this rock was alive.
Page 8
I know now that they are endowed with the Crystal. They don't have a Personality Crystal but all
inanimate objects have a Design Crystal. That thermos has a Design Crystal. They all have their place in
the Universe - they're all moving along. How we perceive them is unimportant. Our eyes are a limitation.
Only when you recognise that everything, everything, everything is the life, everything is the life, that's
Universal Love. That is real innocence.

THE HEART (EGO) CENTRE
INTRODUCTION
The Heart Centre is not something that appears to be particularly complex if you compare it to
the Throat, or you compare it to the Sacral, or you compare it to any of the awareness centres.
It doesn't have all this gate possibility - it's the second least gate-oriented centre. The Head
Centre has only three outlets - the Ego has four. But, biologically, there is nothing more complex
than the Heart Centre. Biologically, the centre is enormously important for us because it is the
work of the Ego to be able to establish the vitality of communities in the world. It's the Ego that
creates the possessive societies that we have, where ownership is the main law - "This land is
mine. This nation is mine." The possessiveness that is inherent in this Ego, when you look at its
biology, you can see that we have the root of how we can establish ourselves in the world
viably. It's all done through the Ego. The Ego has four different biological affiliations. I'm going to
give them to you according to gate.
GATE 21: BITING THROUGH - THE GATE OF THE HUNTER/HUNTRESS
So the 21st gate, which is Biting Through, is the gate of the heart muscle itself. That's why the
mantra: the 21s are here to be in control. Otherwise, they have broken hearts. Because they are
in control of what they eat and what they wear and where they live, this is how they keep their
heart healthy. You can see right away that when you're dealing with the biological affiliation that
is the heart, you can see that this is a core in our human process. It's an essential piece of
plumbing, this muscle. The muscle in the 21, the Heart, you know this old cliche, sexist cliche,
but a cliche nonetheless, the fastest way to a man's heart is through his stomach. When you get
to the 40th gate, Deliverance, you get to the gate of the stomach. The ego, what we call the
ego, the'I', the I comes out of the pounding of the heart. The I comes out of the contraction and
the process of releasing the acids in the stomach because there's food there. The more food in
the belly, the bigger the ego. That's why you have so many abused egos - they're overweight.
GATE 26: THE TAMING POWER OF THE GREAT - THE GATE OF THE EGOIST
(see also below)
The 26th gate is the Gate of the Thymus Gland. The thymus gland is an endocrine gland, and
it's very, very important in our development. This is a direct connection between the Ego and
the Splenic system. It's one of the most essential health channels. It is the thymus gland that
designs the immune system in a human. There is an Ego in a foetus before there is ever a
Spleen. The thymus designs the immune system and keeps on working on that immune system
until you're three years old. Then it takes up the responsibility of defending the immune system.
From the 44th gate we have the release of B-cells. From the 26th gate we have the release of
T-cells. These are killer cells - their job is to kill things that invade the system to keep them alive.
GATE 51: THE AROUSING - THE GATE OF SHOCK
Then you have the 51st gate - The Arousing. The Arousing is affiliated with the gall bladder and
gall - the gall of a fool to leap into the void or the bile. You know the expression: heart of stone -
those are gall bladder stones - no joke. The 51 is the way in which the Ego empowers Universal
Love - the only love that is empowered by the Ego. Without Universal Love, the heart turns to
stone. So we have in the Heart Centre something very complex. It doesn't look complex but it is.
It's also saying something else. Unlike the other centres that have a general biological
application to all of their gates, the pineal gland is serving all three of those gates in that centre.
What you have is a very, very specific biological association with each of the four gates: heart,
stomach, thymus, gall bladder. It's out of these four different varieties biologically that the sum
INTRODUCTION
Being a human being is both the Tao of being between the Sun and the Earth, but it's also the
meat in the middle of the sandwich. We are in a pressure sandwich, and that's what keeps us
moving along. And that pressure sandwich is a stress-anxiety sandwich, and it keeps us moving
along. We are designed to be between these two centres of pressure. We are never free, in that
sense, of being in the field or the line of pressure. You know, at the mystical level, always keep
certain things in mind. Everything other than the Ajna, because that is where we are and that's
where we belong in the cosmic structure, everything else is somewhere out there in the
Universe. Pressure, pressure is not something that lives here. It is not something that is a part
of us - it is something that is passing through. Now it's always passing through - what to do? But
nonetheless you don't have to hold onto it - it's just passing through. It's passing through from
above and it 's passing through from below. And stress is not something that belongs to us
technically - it's just passing through.
Now if you don't interfere with it, it isn't going to disturb you. If you do interfere with it, it will. So
here we are as human beings in this lovely sandwich. You know, we have the pressure above
and the pressure below, and everybody wonders why the world is filled with nothing but
pressure. You know my favourite statistic - 70% of a woman's time world-wide is spent
collecting firewood and water. Talk about being under pressure! Incredible pressure - the stress
of being in the world. And of course everybody thinks that those are bad words. I mean they're
not. We're talking about the essential fuels for our whole living process. The things we don't like
the most - fear, stress, pain - this is what makes us human. It's what drives our consciousness.
After all, awareness is nothing but the result of fear - nothing else. Now the moment you stop
seeing those words - this is the whole thing about being a duality - the moment you're in a
dualistic universe and you're a dualistic being, you're automatically going to put a 'this' and 'that'
on anything. We've got all these words that base our time and history and our culture and civili-
sation, that we lean over to one side as being good and the other side being bad. Fear is not
bad nor is it good, it's both - always. It's just another this and that, but it's a fuel for awareness.
So stress and anxiety, these pressures on us, they are fuels for human life. It's really what
drives us, you know. And we don't get out of the pressure. And if we don't, you know, these
bodies, sucked to Mother Earth by gravity, you know, and all of us trying to jump up and fly, you
know, we're caught in there.
The Root Centre - the full-fledged, major league motor. The actual quality of this motor is stress.
I mean that's what this motor produces: stress. That's what the Root is all about, stress. The
adrenaline gland produces stress hormones. You know, it sounds nice as Kundalini - it's very
sweet. Yeah. It's Kundalini if you've been doing yoga for 35 years; it's stress for everybody else.
It's just stress - Boom! OK?
So you've got something else at work here. The other thing about the Root Centre is that the
Root Centre, it has no direct access to the Throat but it has direct access to the Sacral, and that
direct access to the Sacral is deeply significant because these are the format energies. And you
can
see that the power of this stress mechanism, you know, it's surrounded. The Spleen on one
side, the Solarplex on the other, the Sacral above, and basically it is a pressure system for
those three centres because out of those three centres come everything. The Splenic Centre
