Just Tri Me!

04/12/2018-4/20/2018
Standards:
o   Visual and Performing Arts: Visual Arts Content Standards
§   Grade Five
•   Connections, Relationships, Applications
o   Use linear perspective to depict geometric objects in
space.

Instructional Type and Content

•   We will start in a whole group while I give the directions for the art project, as well as
show different examples other students have completed.
•   Students will then work independently during down time to complete their triangle art.

Classroom Background
•   There are 24 students currently in my 5th grade classroom. One ELL student (early
advanced). My students have learned about the different types of triangles and have learned
the correct way to use a protractor to create different types of triangles.

Goals/Anticipated Outcomes
•   Students will create an interesting pattern on a square piece of paper. The pattern will be
made primarily of triangles and will include at least one example of each of the types of
triangles (scalene, isosceles, equilateral, right, obtuse, acute.)

Materials/Resources
•   Materials include a paper, pencils, rulers, protractors, black markers, and various colored
markers.

Intro (10 min)

•   “Over the next couple weeks, we are going to be working on an art project involving
triangles. You are going to take what you know about the different types of triangles we
are learning about, and create a pattern of triangles on a square piece of paper. Your
creation should have at least one example of each of the types of triangles (scalene,
isosceles, equilateral, right, obtuse, acute).”
•   “You will need to use a ruler and protractor to be sure each triangle is exactly the type you
say it is (almost equilateral doesn’t count-ask for help if you need it). Here are some
different examples.”
•   “I recommend drawing all of your triangles in pencil first, then outlining your triangles in
black, and then finally coloring them in.”
ELL Adaptations
•   Even though my one ELL student is early advanced:
o   I have my ELL student sitting next to a standard English learner who helps make
small clarifications.
