Strathmore Overnight
Shelter opens its doors
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Following three years of ongoing construc-

tion, multiple fundraisers and battling oner-
ous red tape, the Strathmore Overnight Shelter
Library fun (SOS) is open for business.
The project brings a vision to fruition to com-
bat destitution and hardship in Strathmore and
surrounding areas.
Page 17+20 For more than five years, various churches in
the community identified the problem of home-
less people and those needing a helping hand
in the community, much of which was fuelled
by soaring job losses when the economy tum-
bled.
In 2015, Pastor Elizabeth Karp, Pastor Dawn
Nelson, and citizens Waldo Munoz and John
Hilton-O’Brien – now the president of the SOS
board – provided town council with a detailed
Spring snowout proposal on a transition shelter to house people
without overnight accommodation, providing
them with resources within the community and
offering a meal in the morning.
With up to $60,000 from the Town of
Strathmore and thousands of dollars collected
from the municipality and surrounding com-
munities at various fundraisers – including the

raising event, and the Strathmore Stampede

various businesses, the Harvest Healing Cen-

On April 8, the shelter held their grand opening.

Art society to
host its first
fundraiser
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

A local arts society is hosting their first
fundraiser in over 30 years of operations
to show community support, raise dollars
for art programs, and expand further into
Strathmore and Wheatland County.
The Wheatland Society of Arts is host-
ing an art show and fundraiser early next
month, complete with entertainment, a
dinner, and a live and silent auction.
While the money raised will go towards
funding operations and various art pro-
grams – such as Adaptive Art, Youth Art,
and senior programs – the event also lends
itself as a platform to showcase the soci-
ety’s appreciation.
