Quote:
1)Warm-up
2)Release
3)Theme
4)Centering
5)Closure

My Ideas:
This is helpful because it has a set how each session would work, and can help me deepen my research about what
these patients are doing to explain what is helping them

ADTA Mission
Source:
American Dance Therapy Association . 2016, adta.org/. Accessed 5 Feb. 2018.

Quote:
The Mission Of The ADTA Is To:
1. Define, promote and support the highest standards of education, credentialing, ethical practice and
professional identity of dance/movement therapists;
2. Increase professional opportunities for the membership by advocating for the inclusion of dance/movement
therapy in healthcare, legislative, educational and research systems;
3. Support internal communication among members, between the ADTA and the membership, and external
communication nationally and internationally.
4. Create opportunities for skill development, networking, community and fund-raising by producing an annual
conference.
5. Support the growth of the ADTA and the profession by recruiting new members and responding to current
membership needs.

My Ideas:
Since this is where I am planning on interviewing a dance therapist from, it is good to get background about their
goals.

Benefits of being Confident

Source:
Zehr, Michelle. “Physical Education Games for Elementary Children.” LIVESTRONG.COM , Leaf Group, 13 June 2017,
www.livestrong.com/article/350757-physical-education-games-elementary-children/.

Quote:
Confident children participate fully in classroom activities, learn to solve conflicts by using words and accept that
making mistakes is part of the learning process.

My Ideas:
This will be useful because I have multiple sources talking about how students have to gain self esteem, but this
shows exactly what a student gets out of increasing their confidence.

Create relationships
Source:
American Dance Therapy Association . 2016, adta.org/. Accessed 5 Feb. 2018.

Paraphrase:
Dance therapy helps people with autism have the ability to create relationships. It does this by helping them find
better ways of communicating themselves, and giving them the confidence that they need to be social.

My Ideas:
This is helpful because it talks about the specific ways that this is directly effecting someones life, and takes it out
of the session and into the real world.
Daily movements

Leventhal, Marcia B. "Dance Therapy as Treatment of Choice for the Emotionally Disturbed Learning Disabled
Child." Focus on Dance IX: Dance for the Handicapped . Scribd , www.scribd.com/document/250692703/Dance-
therapy-as-treatment-of-choice-for-the-emotionally-disturbed-learning-disabled-child-doc. Accessed 14 Feb. 2018.

Paraphrase:
Someone's mood is shown usually through an expression or a gesture. If someone learns positive movements, they
are more likely to use them, and improve their mood.

My Ideas:
This shows how dance therapy can be applied to someone's everyday life.

dance classes
Source:
Performance Dance Arts . 2018, www.performingdancearts.ca/blog/dancing-can-help-improve-young-children-s-
social-skills/. Accessed 14 Feb. 2018.

Quote:
Dance lessons are an excellent way for kids to foster social skills. Studies have found that children respond well to
activities that involve music and movement, and dance classes also encourage a child’s creativity and sense of
awareness regarding themselves and others.

My Ideas:
This is useful because it broadens the scope. It adds information and changes it from just being about dance
therapy and learning disabilities and changes it to how dance helps people

definition of dance therapy

Source:
American Dance Therapy Association . 2016, adta.org/. Accessed 5 Feb. 2018.

Quote:
American Dance Therapy Association defines dance/movement therapy as the psychotherapeutic use of
movement to further the emotional, cognitive, physical and social integration of the individual.

My Ideas:
This gives a reliable definition for dance therapy. This is needed because not everyone knows what dance therapy
is
eye contact

Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy , vol. 4, no. 10, Oct. 2013,
doi:10.5901/mjss.2013.v4n10p68. Accessed 4 Feb. 2018.

Paraphrase:
Music creates an non-threatening environment, where children can have verbal and non-verbal communications.
Staum discovered that activites like passing a ball or musical chairs can increase interactions between kids. It also
helps them feel more comfortable making eye contact with one another and build concentration

My Ideas:
I want to use this because this is something that you can visualize, and it explains how dance therapy helps people
socially.

how Dance Therapy is Different from Dance Class

Source:
American Dance Therapy Association . 2016, adta.org/. Accessed 5 Feb. 2018.

Quote:
The goal of dance/movement therapy is not like that of a dance class where teaching stylized steps or routines
are the focus, nor is it an exercise class, directly focusing on the development of motor skill or physical release. All
of these goals certainly can be addressed, but there is so much more that occurs. Instead, dance/movement
therapy is a carefully attuned therapeutic process that can look differently depending upon its participants

My Ideas:
This is a helpful distinction that I will want to make at the beginning of my documentary to help people understand
my topic more.

How dancing helps a child learn

Source:
Zehr, Michelle. “Physical Education Games for Elementary Children.” LIVESTRONG.COM , Leaf Group, 13 June 2017,
www.livestrong.com/article/350757-physical-education-games-elementary-children/.

Quote:
Cross-curricular links that incorporate social development learning objectives into planned dance activities nurture
children's creativity and physical skills, while encouraging self-awareness and awareness of others.
My Ideas:
This is helpful because it explains what exactly the goals of having kids dance is. It is a nice basis to explain why
children should do dance.

mimicking
Source:
Performance Dance Arts . 2018, www.performingdancearts.ca/blog/dancing-can-help-improve-young-children-s-
social-skills/. Accessed 14 Feb. 2018.

Paraphrase:
dance classes is a place where it encourages a child to copy the teacher. This helps kids learn to pick up on social
cues and emotion because dance involves facial expressions.

My Ideas:
This goes into details of what skills kids would be improving by doing dance, so this is very helpful.

Music helps children identify things

Source:
Surujlal, Jhalukpreya. "Music and Dance as Learning Interventions for Children with Intellectual Disabilities."
Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy , vol. 4, no. 10, Oct. 2013,
doi:10.5901/mjss.2013.v4n10p68. Accessed 4 Feb. 2018.

Quote:
According to the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) (2006), the repetition of songs enable intellectually
challenged children to identify numbers, colours and objects, develop cognitive, behavioural, physical, emotional
and social skills, and enhance communication. AMTA (2006) also argues that involvement in music stimulates
attention and encourages participation in educational settings.

My Ideas:
This shows a direct correlation between music therapy and learning disabilities, which is very similar and I have
read have similar results.

Music Therapy Definition

Source:
American Music Therapy Association . 1998, www.musictherapy.org/. Accessed 14 Feb. 2018.
Quote:
Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals
within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy
program.

My Ideas:
This will be useful because when I am trying to describe different types of art therapies.

music therapy uses

Source:
American Music Therapy Association . 1998, www.musictherapy.org/. Accessed 14 Feb. 2018.

Quote:
Music therapy interventions can be designed to:
• Promote Wellness
• Manage Stress
• Alleviate Pain
• Express Feelings
• Enhance Memory
• Improve Communication
• Promote Physical Rehabilitation

My Ideas:
This shows an alternative form of art therapy, which can help with the same problems, so I think this is a good to
have as a comparison.

non-verbal communication
Source:
American Dance Therapy Association . 2016, adta.org/. Accessed 5 Feb. 2018.

Paraphrase:
Part of the reason why dance therapy is most helpful for helping people with autism or severe learning disabilities
is because they may not talk much, or at all. However, everyone can communicate non-verbally, so it is a way in
which dance therapists can communicate with their patients.

My Ideas:
This is helpful because it talks about why dance therapy is more helpful than other kinds of art therapies
number of people with learning disabilities

Surujlal, Jhalukpreya. "Music and Dance as Learning Interventions for Children with Intellectual Disabilities."

doi:10.5901/mjss.2013.v4n10p68. Accessed 4 Feb. 2018.

Quote:
In 2009, it was estimated that there were approximately 200 million people with intellectual disabilities in the
world

My Ideas:
I want to use this because statistics is a great way to get people to truly understand how many people are effected
by this.

Premise of Dance Therapy

Source:
American Dance Therapy Association . 2016, adta.org/. Accessed 5 Feb. 2018.

Quote:
Dance/movement therapy relies on the following premises:
1. Movement is a language, our first language. Nonverbal and movement communication begins in utero and
continues throughout the lifespan. Dance/movement therapists believe that nonverbal language is as
important as verbal language and use both forms of communication in the therapeutic process.
2. Mind, body, and spirit are interconnected.
3. Movement can be functional, communicative, developmental, and expressive. Dance/movement therapists
observe, assess, and intervene by looking at movement, through these lenses, as it emerges in the
therapeutic relationship in the therapeutic session.
4. Movement is both an assessment tool and a primary mode of intervention.

My Ideas:
This helps explain why people do dance therapy, and why it works.

Psychologically How dance therapy works

Source:
Leventhal, Marcia B. "Dance Therapy as Treatment of Choice for the Emotionally Disturbed Learning Disabled
Child." Focus on Dance IX: Dance for the Handicapped . Scribd , www.scribd.com/document/250692703/Dance-
therapy-as-treatment-of-choice-for-the-emotionally-disturbed-learning-disabled-child-doc. Accessed 14 Feb. 2018.

Quote:
Dance therapists work directly with sensory motor and perceptual motor developement and integration to build or
rebuild body image in its most primitive form through tactile and kinaesthetic stimulation
My Ideas:
This gives a psychological approach to how dance therapy helps people

Spatial awareness
Source:
Performance Dance Arts . 2018, www.performingdancearts.ca/blog/dancing-can-help-improve-young-children-s-
social-skills/. Accessed 14 Feb. 2018.

Paraphrase:
A skill that children learn in dance is spatial awareness. This is helpful in day to day life because it teaches kids that
that people should have their personal space, and that you should not invade that. This is especially learned in
dance because the consequences to not having your own personal space is dance is the possibility of getting kicked

My Ideas:
This is an example of something you can learn in dance and can be especially applied for people with learning
disabilities because this is something they struggle more to succeed at.

stimulates learning
Source:
Surujlal, Jhalukpreya. "Music and Dance as Learning Interventions for Children with Intellectual Disabilities."
Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy , vol. 4, no. 10, Oct. 2013,
doi:10.5901/mjss.2013.v4n10p68. Accessed 4 Feb. 2018.

Paraphrase:
Dance and music therapy has been shown to stimulate learning. Dance can caused students to have an increase in
understanding of what they are learning in the classroom, and causes them to have better behavior.

My Ideas:
I want to use this as more explanation why dancing is helpful for people who are struggling to focus or understand
things in the classroom.
