Problems proposed in the Course of Math III
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering

First Part

1. Function values. Find the specific function values

a) f (x, y) = x2 + 3xy − 5; f (−1, 3) c) f (x, y, z) = x−y

y 2 +z 2
, f (3, −1, 2)

b) f (x, y) = sin(xy); f (2, π6 ) d ) f (x, y, z) = √ x+y+z

, f ( √42 , √52 , √62 )
49−x2 −y 2 −z 2

2. Domain. Find and sketch the domain for each function. You can use a computer program to graph
the domain of functions

a) f (x, y) = y − x − 2 e) f (x, y) = x2 + y 2

b) f (x, y) = ln(x2 + y 2 − 4) f ) f (x, y) = x y
(x−1)(y+2) x+y
c) f (x, y) = (y−x)(y−x3 ) g) f (x, y) = xy
sin(xy) xy
d ) f (x, y) = x2 +y 2 −25
h) f (x, y) = x2 −y 2

3. Computer Graphics. Level curves. Drawing an assortment of level curves in the function’s
domain. Label each level curve with its function value. Using contour.

a) z = x2 + y 2 e) z = x2 + y 2 , c = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4

b) z = 25 − x2 − y 2 f ) f (x, y) = x + y + 1, c = −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3
c) z = x2 + 2y 2 g) f (x, y) = x2 + y 2 , c = 0, 1, 4, 9
d) z = x + y h) f (x, y) = xy, c = −4, −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4

4. Temperature Distribution. The temperature T (in degrees Celsius) at any point (x, y) in a circular
steel plate of radius 10 meters is T = 600 − 0.75x2 − 0.75y 2 , where x and y are measured in meters.
Draw the isotherms for T = 300, T = 400 y T = 500 (degrees Celsius).

5. Electric Potential. The electric potential V at any point (x, y) is

5
V (x, y) = √
25 + x2 + y 2

Sketch the equipotential curves for V = 12 , V = 31 , V = 1

4
and V = 15 .

6. Electric Potential. The function

k
V (x, y) = √
r 2 − x2 − y 2

LL 1 UCV
where k and r are positive constants, gives the electric potential (in volts) at a point (x, y) in the
xy − plane. Describe the level curves of V and sketch a representative set. note: The level curves
of V are called the equipotential curves; all points on an equipotential curve have the same electric
potential.

Second Part

7. Computer Graphics. The problem of sketching the graph of a surface in space can be simplified
by using a computer. Use a computer algebra system to graph the function.

a) √
− x2 +y 2 /4
z = (cos x)(cos y)e
b)
2 −y 2 /4
z = (2 − y 2 + x2 )e1−x
c)
z = e−y cos x
d)
z = sin(x)sin(y)
e)
xy(x2 − y 2 )
z=
x2 + y 2
f)
1 − x2 − y 2
z=√ , x ∈ [−0.5, 0.5], y ∈ [−0.5, 0.5]
1 − x2 − y 2
g)
2 −y 2
z = e1−x
h) √
sin x2 + y 2
z= √ , x ∈ [−8, 8], y ∈ [−6, 6]
x2 + y 2
i)
x2 − y 2
z= √ , x ∈ [−0.5, 0.5], y ∈ [−3, 3]
