February 2012

Dear Parents:

This is a letter to inform you of an independent study project being assigned to all the
Grade 4-8 classes. Students are to prepare speeches that will be presented in class at a later date.
Winners will be chosen from each grade to speak at the BTOC School Finals to be held on ,
2012. Two students from each grade will be selected to go on to represent BTOC at the system
regional finals to be held at 6:30 p.m. on at .

We ask the students to choose a topic they know well and confirm it with their teacher.
We will provide a list of suggested topics for your child. The topics will vary depending on the
age of the student.

The speech should be 3-5 minutes in length for most of the students. However, if English
is a second language, we will modify the time.

Each student is required to memorize the speech if possible, while referring to cue cards
from time to time.

Although the student should do most of the work, guidance is encouraged from the
parent(s). We will allot time in the classroom for preparation of speeches.

Should you have any further questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher at
the school.

Sincerely,

Mr. V. Colella
