ABSTRACT

AN ANALYSIS ON RISK FACTORS OF MOTHERS DELIVERING BABIES

SUFFERING FROM ASPHYXIA AT BAHTERAMAS REGIONAL PUBLIC
HOSPITAL

Asphyxia is the failure of a newborn baby to breathe spontaneously and regularly resulting
in further disorder which influences the entire body metabolisms. The risk factors leading
to the occurrence of asphyxia increase include preeclampsia, eclampsia, fever suffering
during pregnancy, and overtime pregnancy. The purpose of this research is to analyze the
risk factors of mothers delivering babies suffering from asphyxia at Bahteramas Regional
Public Hospital.

This analytical observational research employs a case control design. The population of
this research covers the entire mothers who deliver babies suffering from asphyxia within
a period of January until December, 2015 at Bahteramas Regional Public Hospital. A
purposive sampling technique is employed to obtain the 136 samples consisting of 68
samples classified into the experimental group and the other 68 samples classified into the
control group. The risk factors of mothers delivering babies suffering from asphyxia are
analyzed by determining the values of Odds Ratio with the confidence level of 95%.

The research results show that preeclampsia is the risk factor of mothers delivering babies
suffering from asphyxia at Bahteramas Regional Public Hospital (OR = 2.31 (Cl ; 1.16 –
4.60)); eclampsia is the risk factor of mothers delivering babies suffering from asphyxia at
Bahteramas Regional Public Hospital (OR = 4.05 (Cl ; 1.72 – 9.54)); fever suffering during
pregnancy is the risk factor of mothers delivering babies suffering from asphyxia at
Bahteramas Regional Public Hospital (OR = 3.26 (Cl ; 1.60 – 6.67)); and overtime
pregnancy is the risk factor of mothers delivering babies suffering from asphyxia at
Bahteramas Regional Public Hospital (OR = 2.97 (Cl ; 1.47 – 5.97))

The research concludes that preeclampsia, eclampsia, fever suffering during pregnancy and
overtime pregnancy are the risk factors of mothers delivering babies suffering from
asphyxia at Bahteramas Regional Public Hospital.
