DUOMO SQUARE
It is set where the first middle age fortified citadel stood, the very first core of Crema.
It was restored during the renaissance after the annexation to the Venetian Republic
(1449), and today it represents the historical downtown, framed by its most repre-
sentative monuments.
DUOMO
It is a fine building in Lombard gothic style
(1284-1341). The church gives shelter to the
remainings of the previous Romanic cathe-
dral, destroyed by Frederick I Barbarossa in
1160, which are still visible in the crypt. The
compact brick-worked face matches the fine
decorations that enhance the beauty of ope-
nings, niches, rose windows, panels and fra-
mes, turning the cathedral into a real jewel of
its own kind. As firm keeper of millenary me-
mories, it hosts several evidences of Crema’s
history and arts.
ST. DOMINIC’S THEATRE
The whole structure of the previous renais-
sance Dominican monastery (that is to say
the church, the courtyard, the refectory
and the nunnery) hosts nowadays the city
theatre and the civic music school “Luigi
Folcioni”. The fine architectonical elegance
of the façade matches the atmosphere of
the ancient square, which is surrounded by
equally fine and relevant buildings.
ST. AUGUSTINE’S EX-CONVENT
Built starting from 1439, it had been the
Mother house of the Osservanza Agosti-
niana. The two perfectly preserved cour-
tyards lead to the beautiful refectory, with
reinassance frescos by Pietro Da Cemmo.
The first floor hosts Crema’s Civic Museum.
VENETIAN WALLS
These walls used to protect the venetian
city, which today is the historical centre,
during the 15th century. They were mostly
demolished, starting from the first decades
of the 20th century, and today just few si-
gnificant remains still survive; they can be
seen at the Public Gardens, at Campo di
Marte and along via Diaz, via Gramsci and
via Stazione.
CITY HALL
Its construction was decided in 1525 by the
Venetian government, in order to replace
the former seat of power. It is characterized
by a fine mix between Lombard architectu-
re elements (such as brick-worked borders
and frames) and venetian features (the triple
lancet windows at the main floor). The offices
and the City Hall state rooms are located in
the inner area of the building, in the Great
Tower, Guelph Tower and Praetorian Palace.
PATRINI - POZZALI PALACE
It has been built between the ending of the
17th century and the first decades of the
18th. The majestic façade has little decora-
tion, just the balcony above already stunning
entrance. The building underwent some
modifications at the beginning of the past
century.
BONDENTI - TERNI DE GREGORY PALACE
It was built upon desire of the Bondenti
Count and designed by Giuseppe Cozzi and
Andrea Nono. The marvellous cotto tile ma-
king is embellished by the rococò style that
characterizes windows, frames, gables and
the entrance. The iron entrance gate is a
masterpiece of iron craft. The unfinished
wing adds some charm to the already myste-
rious-looking palace.
HOLY MARY OF THE CROSS’ BASILICA
It was designed in 1490 by the architect Gio-
vanni Battaggio from Lodi, and it’s a wonder-
ful example of the bramantesque style. The
structure is quite complex, with a central
plan appearance, round on the outside and
octagonal on the inside. The inside’s decora-
tions are stunning, with relevant 15th century
paintings by the Campi brothers and majestic
baroque frescos.
