STEP 1: INSTALL THE BATTERIES AND ATTACH THE TETHER
1. Use a coin or screwdriver to rotate the battery cover lock to a
horizontal position.

2. Remove the battery cover.
3. If desired, attach the tether. Wrap the loop of string around the
inside part of the lock.
4. Install the batteries in the correct position, as indicated by the +/-
symbols. The end of the battery with the protruding tip is the
positive side.
WARNING: Do not install the batteries incorrectly. Damage may
result.
5. Replace the battery cover and turn the lock into a vertical position to
lock it into place.
6. If desired, attach the tether to a lanyard or belt.

STEP 2: CHARGE THE CHS
Use the included AC adapter to charge the CHS. Alternatively, you can
use the charging cradle, available separately. The CHS must be fully
charged before its first use.
LED Indications for Battery Status
LED Activity Meaning
1 blink per second Less than 20% of battery life remaining
Solid red Batteries are charging
Green Batteries are fully charged
WARNING:
− Only use NiMH batteries in the CHS. If alkaline or other types of
batteries are charged, damage may occur, and the battery status LED
may not function properly.
− Do not store the CHS for more than 30 days with the batteries
installed, or the battery may drain completely.
STEP 3: UNINSTALL OTHER SCANNING SOFTWARE
Uninstall any bar code scanning software already in your computer,
including previous versions of SocketScan™ software.
1. Make sure the software is not running.
2. Click Start | Control Panel. For Windows Vista, click Programs and
Features. For Windows XP, click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Use the utility to uninstall the software.
STEP 4: INSTALL SOCKETSCAN SOFTWARE STEP 5: TURN ON THE CHS
1. Make sure you are logged into the computer with an administrative Press and hold the small power button for 3 seconds, until you see

Status Indicator Beeps

The scanner beeps to signal the Bluetooth connection status. You can
also configure it to indicate scanned data reaching the host device.

STEP 6: START BLUETOOTH ON YOUR COMPUTER Microsoft Bluetooth Stack:

Toshiba Bluetooth Stack:
1. Double-click on the Bluetooth icon at the bottom of your screen.
2. In the Bluetooth Settings screen, click New Connection.
3. In the wizard, select Custom Mode. Click Next.
4. After the device search, select Socket CHS [xxxxxx]. Click Next.
5. If a passkey is requested, enter the default PIN 1234 . Click OK.
6. In the list of device services, select Serial Port. Click Next.
7. In the next screen, uncheck Use default COM port. Click Next.
8. A screen will state that the default setting is recommended. Click OK.
9. In the next screen, select another COM port. If desired, select Auto
Connect. Click Next.
WARNING! Do not select a COM port that is used by another
device on your system!
10. After the wizard reports that COM port selection is complete,
remember the COM port number and click Next.
11. In the next screen, edit the connection name and/or icon if desired
and click Next.
12. In the last screen, click Finish.

Broadcom (Widcomm) Bluetooth Stack:
Refer to the manual for your Bluetooth hardware/software for specific
instructions. Many Bluetooth USB adapters use this stack.
1. Click the Bluetooth icon in the task tray. Click Quick Connect |
Bluetooth Serial Port | Find Devices.
It is essential to connect with Quick Connect because this sets the CHS
as your default Bluetooth serial device.
2. After the device search, select Socket CHS [xxxxxx].
3. If a passkey is requested, enter 1234 .
STEP 8: START SOCKETSCAN
Double-click on the SocketScan icon on your desktop.
Whenever SocketScan is running either of two icons will appear in the
task tray.

STEP 9: CONFIGURE SCANNER SETTINGS

1. Click on the SocketScan icon. In the pop-up menu, click Settings.

STEP 11: OPEN YOUR APPLICATION

1. Start the application that you want to enter scanned data into. Make
sure a document or spreadsheet is open.

2. Place the cursor where you want data to be entered.

STEP 12: SCAN DATA INTO YOUR APPLICATION

1. Press the large trigger button and scan the bar code. The red aiming
beam should cover the entire width of the bar code.

• Enable CS support: Check this box. IMPORTANT!!!

• Port: Select the outgoing COM port number assigned to the CHS
(reported by the Toshiba/Microsoft/Broadcom connection wizard).
