2 Overview
2.1 Introduction
With the GSM PS Service Map feature, the BSC provides packet switched (PS) service call
history record (CHR) logs based on measurements of PS services. A PS CHR log includes
terminal types, PS service types, PS traffic volume, and PS measurement reports (MRs). Upon
receiving PS CHR logs from the BSC, the iManager Nastar (referred to as the Nastar in this
document) analyzes the logs and displays the PS traffic volume on a grid map. There are two
map display types:
1. By service type
The BSC identifies the types of ongoing PS services and records the PS service types in
PS CHR logs. The service types include instant messaging (IM), web browsing, email,
streaming, and point-to-point (P2P). For each service type in PS CHR logs collected
from the BSC, the Nastar calculates the total traffic volume per grid and can display the
traffic volume distribution per service type. If the total traffic volume in certain grids is
large, expand resources for the services in these areas.
NOTE
The BSC supports differentiated management for IM services, web browsing services, email
services, streaming services, and P2P services. For details about differentiated management, see
GPRS/EGPRS QoS Feature Parameter Description.
2. By terminal type
The BSC identifies the types of terminals performing services and records the terminal
types in PS CHR logs. The terminal types include dual-mode MS, dual-mode data card,
and Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi)-capable terminal. For each terminal type in PS CHR logs
collected from the BSC, the Nastar calculates the total traffic volume per grid and can
display the traffic volume distribution per terminal type.
– If the total traffic volume of dual-mode MSs or data cards is high in certain grids,
modify interoperability parameters to achieve inter-RAT load balance, improve
quality of services, and better utilize network resources. (RAT is short for radio
access technology.)
– If the total traffic volume of Wi-Fi-capable terminals is high in certain grids, deploy
wireless local area networks (WLANs) in these hot spots.
2.2 Benefits
With the GSM PS Service Map feature, operators can view the resource distribution of the
entire network and identify bottlenecks. This feature helps operators deal with data deluge and
guides hot spot coverage planning and network capacity expansion. Figure 2-1 shows a
zoomed-out example of the grid map for network geographic analysis.

3 Technical Description
3.1 Overview
The BSC records PS traffic volume, PS service types, International Mobile Equipment
Identities (IMEIs), and PS MRs in PS CHR logs when the following minimum conditions are
met on the BSC:
l The PS CHR function is enabled.
l The service identification function is enabled.
l The IMEIs of terminals are available.
l Network control mode 1 (NC1) or network control mode 2 (NC2) is used.
Upon receiving PS CHR logs from the BSC, the Nastar analyzes the logs for a specified area
and time, collects the geographic locations of PS terminals, and displays PS service
distribution on a grid map. Figure 3-1 shows the position of the Nastar in a GSM network.
l The BSC records PS service types if both of the following conditions are met:
– The service identification function is enabled (by setting
SPTDPI(BSC6900,BSC6910) to SUPPORT(GGSN Support) in the SET
GCELLGPRS command).
– The service type output function is enabled (by setting
PSCHRServiceType(BSC6900,BSC6910) to ON(Output) in the SET
GPSCHRCTRL command).
NOTE
Before enabling the service identification function, turn on the service awareness switch on the U2000
by setting ServiceAwareCtrlSw(BSC6900,BSC6910) to ON(On).
l The BSC records IMEIs if both of the following conditions are met:
– The IMEIs of terminals are available.
NOTE
For details about the NC2 feature, see NC2 Feature Parameter Description .

Step 1 Run the SET GPSCHRCTRL command with its parameters set as follows:
l Set PS CHR Switch to ON(ON).
l Set Mode Control to SPECUSRM(Specified User Mode).
When configuring the GSM PS Service Map feature on the CME, you must perform a single
configuration first, and then perform batch modifications if required.
You must perform a single configuration for a parameter before batch modifications of the parameter.
You are advised to perform batch modifications before logging out of the parameter setting interface.
To modify objects, such as BSCs, BTSs, cells, and TRXs, in batches, click the icon on
the CME configuration interface to start the batch modification wizard. For the method of
performing batch modifications through the CME batch modification center, press F1 on the

6.7 Troubleshooting
Rule Library File Incorrectly Loaded to the NIU Board
If ServiceAwareCtrlSw(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On) and
VERIFYLIBVER(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to YES(Verify) on the U2000, the BSC checks
the rule library version running on the NIU board.
ALM-20284 Failed to Load the Rule Lib File is reported when either of the following
conditions is met:
l The rule library version of the NIU board is incompatible with the current product
version.
l The rule library version of the NIU board is different from that specified by
SETTINGLIBVER(BSC6900,BSC6910).
For details about how to clear the alarm, maintenance personnel can refer to operation
provided in the online alarm help, BSC6910 GSM Alarm Reference, or BSC6900 GSM Alarm
