MODEL EXAM

Assumptions taken to design the steel elements

a. Take Fy 250 N/mm2 and Fu 410 N/mm2.
b. Assume allowable shear strength to be 56 MPa for connections.

PART – A
Answer all the questions
10 x 2 = 20
1. Explain gauge distance and edge distance with neat sketch.
2. Define staggered pitch with sketch.
3. Define slenderness ratio and net sectional area.
4. Write note on tension member splice.
5. Draw the column base plate diagram.
6. Define single lacing & double lacing.
7. What is meant by plastic hinge?
8. Define shape factor & yield length.
9. Draw neat sketches of various types of roof trusses.
10. What are the loads to be considered while designing the purlins?
PART – B
Answer all questions
11. A) Find the value of the load P, if 16 mm dia bearing type bolts of grade
4.6 are to be used in the bracket connection shown in fig. below. Take
eccentricity e = 150 mm. Use Fe 410 grade plates for design.

(OR)

(b) A bracket carrying a load of 100 kN is connected to column by means of two horizontal fillet
welds, of 130 mm effective length and 10 mm thick. The load acts at 70 mm from the face of the
column as shown.

12. (a) Design a double angle tension member carrying axial tensile force of 300kN in addition to
this, it is also subjected to a uniformly distributed load of 0.4kN/m throughout its length,
including self weight. The centre to centre distance between the end connections is 2.7 m.

(OR)

(b) A double angle ISA 75mm x 75mm x 8mm back to back welded to one side of a 12mm
gusset have allowable stress 150MPa. Determine the allowable tensile load on the members
and weld length and overlap length of gusset plate.
13. (a) Design a 8.0 m long column consisting of two channels placed back to back laced together
by single lacing. The column carries an axial factored load of 1000 kN. The column is
effectively held in position at both ends and restrained against rotation at one end.

(OR)

(b) A steel column 12 m long carries an axial load of 1000 kN. The column is hinged at both
ends. Design an economical built-up section with double lacing. Design the lacing also.

14. (a) Design the step by step procedure for design of vertical and horizontal stiffeners in a plate
girder.

(OR)

(b) ISMB 550 @1.037 kN/ m has been used as simply supported over a span of 4 m. The ends
of beam are restrained against torsion but not against lateral bending. Determine the safe UDL
per metre, which the beam can carry.

15. (a) Design a purlin for a roof truss having the following data:
Span of the truss = 8.0 m
Spacing of the truss = 3.0 m c/c
Inclination of Roof = 45o
Spacing of Purlin = 2.0 m c/c
Wind pressure = 1.5kN/m²
Roof coverage = AC Sheeting weighing 250 N/m²

Provide channel section purlin.

(OR)
(b) Explain step by step procedure in the design of gantry girders. Also explain the loads that
would be considered in the design.
PART – C 1 x 15 = 15Marks
Answer all questions

16. (a) Design a buildup column 10 m long to carry an axial load of 750kN. The column is
restrained in position but not in direction at both ends. Provide single lacing system with
bolted connection. Assume all the datas needed to design the column to transmit the load
safely.
(OR)

(b) An ISLC 300 @ 324.7 N/m is used to transmit a force of 600 kN. The channel section
is connected to a gusset plate of 10 mm thick. Design a fillet weld if the overlap is limited
to 350 mm. use slot welds if required. Find the bellow fig for reference.
