The Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) and The international convention for
the prevention of pollution by ships know as MARPOL have been implemented by every
maritime country. SOLAS is an international maritime treaty which sets minimum safety
standards in the construction, equipment and operation of merchant ships. MARPOL is one
of the most important international marine environmental conventions. It was developed by
the International Maritime Organization in an effort to minimize pollution of the oceans and
seas, including dumping, oil and air pollution.

Bulk carries the workhorses of the fleet transport raw materials such as iron, coal, and
foodstuff . The largest bulk carriers can carry up to 200 thousand tons of grains. Tanker

300 thousand tons of oil.
